Due to the nature of Six Sigma projects with each one being different, I do not believe you should ever take the BB expert out of the learning process. However, elearning can be effectively incorporated into a Six Sigma curriculum using a blended approach. You can use elearning modules to teach the basic concepts of Six Sigma and save the BB and MBB time and expertise for helping project teams apply the concepts specifically to their own project.
I have recently completed a project developing 8 e-learning Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing modules that are being used at suppliers who do not have the time or dollars available to send their staff to lengthy off-site training sessions and flexibility is key to gaining their participation.
Feedback from project team members using the e-learning modules to has been very positive. Team members appreciated the flexibility and time savings that resulted from incorporating an elearning approach.
Using the e-learning modules, we cut the classrooom time for teaching basic Six Sigma concepts in half. Saving team member classroom seat time, facilitator classroom time and travel expenses while still achieving positive results. In fact, the suppliers using the elearning modules continued beyond one project and have used them throughout their company to spread the knowledge and complete additional projects. The beginnings of a culture shift!
As an instructional designer of both elearning and classroom Six Sigma courses, I have seen the benefits possible using a blended approach. If designed and implemented properly, e-learning can help reduce Six Sigma deployment costs.
