The t test is fine for comparing two continuous samples. If you are using proportion, you can use a 2 proportion test. It all depends on the nature of what you are measuring. It sounds like height which is continuous. The t test works for two independent random samples. You would use a paired t test if the subjects remained constant and you did a before and after treatment on the same subjects.
