Can a Novice Learn Six Sigma Methodology on the Fly?

I am a radiologist in a small private group. Although we are already quite progressive given our small size (taking business from larger regional groups through personalized service and quick turnaround) I am interested in learning six sigma methodology to improve our ability to service more patients and referring physicians with ever evolving and improving service. I don't have the time to devote weeks to a course nor do we have the resources to hire a "consultant". Are there texts which can start me in the right direction? Is it foolish to try without large corporate backing? Any advice would be appreciated.
