Newspaper Aims to Improve Printing: A TQM Case Study

Caught in an exploding market, the management of a media organization in India realized that improving the quality of printing of its newspaper was imperative to survival and progress. The organization adopted total quality management (TQM) and has completed several improvements in office processes related to turnaround time, which is so vital to a newspaper in bringing the 'freshest' news to its readers.

If you're basing analyses on hard data alone, and don't include the variation inherent in any manufacturing, engineering, or service processes, you're only leveraging a portion of information available. Oracle Crystal Ball gives you a complete view by allowing you to use simulation, modeling, optimization, and forecasting to predict and reduce the effects of variation.

Are these challenges familiar?

  • Difficulty quantifying and forecasting the effects of variation in a new process or design.
  • Inability to identify key factors (CTQs) that drive uncertainty in a process.
  • Need to maximize the probability of meeting design elements without excessive testing costs.
  • Trouble explaining the effects of variation in a clear, concise manner.
  • Ideally want to optimize processes to improve efficiency and reduce waste.

When to Use a Multi-vari Chart
What is the first analysis tool in Six Sigma that should be used when we don't have much time, as in traditional Six Sigma projects, and we don't want to go for guesses of process experts? The tool must not be statistically heavy and avoided by management due to its complexity. Is it multi-vari chart?

An Acceptable Level of Confidence
I am performing a transportation simulation for disposable devices. There has been arguments if we should use 95/90 (confidence/reliability) or 99/99. Obviously the number of samples is dramatically increased for the highest level. Some argue that there is no statistical merit in going to the 99/99. I need some feedback.

Gage R&R Methods for Live Processes
Has anybody conducted Gage studies on live processes, such as steam pressure or flow rates or weightometers where it is not possible to stop the process or measure the same 'part' more than once? I have heard of a technique called 'online' gage MSA, but have not been able to find any info. I have thought about using different technology and compare readings, but this is costly and impracticable in many cases. Can any provide guidance on how this type of MSA might be achieved?

Conducting QFD Interviews
Can anyone recommend a moderator for the US who could conduct some QFD interviews for me? This is for a business-to-business discussion on heavy equipment.

Taking Green Belt Classes
I'm interested in getting Green Belt certified, and I was wondering what you all recommend - doing it online or in an actual classroom? Online would certainly be convenient, but I have never taken an online course before and am worried if I might have questions or something I might not get the help I need.
