10 Catalysts for Successful Six Sigma Programs

Although many people may be most familiar with the term catalyst in its scientific form, catalysts can do more than cause or speed up chemical reactions. A catalyst can also be a person or thing that precipitates change within an organization.

To be successful, Six Sigma programs often need certain catalysts to help ingrain the method in an organization. The following 10 catalysts are most important in ensuring that a program takes hold.

Avoiding Assembly Errors
We currently mold a dash which takes secondary door. The door is a WIP component and is installed immediately after the dash is molded by an operator at the end of conveyor. We do not normally have an issue with missing doors; however, it seems in every shipment (1,000) we get a customer call with approximately 5 doors assembled incorrectly.

"There are two hinge points at the top of the door. Incorrect assembly normally occurs when one hinge point is not connected. I thought of using a china marker at both locations but interested in any other ideas the group may have.

Changing Management of Receivables
As part of my company's drive to have a Six Sigma belt of any color on staff, I have to write a paper. I'm a novice, and a clueless one at that. A senior manager says that our receivables component must stop managing by the numbers and numerical goals, which I've just learned is part of Deming's 14 points.

"So in a task involving the collection of money, how is this possible? Our managers are measured on dollars they obtain, nothing else, but this VP says it shouldn't be that way and I have to write a paper supporting his view. Not only that, but this is to be a 'test' Green Belt project for me.

Standardization of Predictors
I am looking for advice on best practices in standardization of predictors prior to running a multiple regression analysis on historical data. My interest in centering and scaling is to remove the units and allow for the inclusion of cross-product terms without introducing additional co-linearity.

Charting Defective Data
I need to chart 'defective' data and I am obviously thinking of using a p-chart. However, business is telling me that they want 'zero' defectives and therefore, they want to see a chart showing the actual number of 'defectives' rather than percentage. What is the recommended approach now?

Preventive Action Request
I have received a confusing 'Preventive Action Request' from my customer last week. Included in this request is a DFMEA template that was attached and prescribed as the methodology to employ in our response. I am confused as to why we received a Preventive Action Request for a component part of a purchased sub assembly we have been delivering for three years without a single failure or rejection. Is it a violation of ISO 9001 to refuse to respond to preventive action request that requires performing a DFMEA on a product not of our design?
