Carefully Planned Kaizens Can Lead to Immediate Change

Kaizen events - concentrated meetings that are designed to bring about rapid change - are often misunderstood by those who have not completed one. From the outside, the events may simply seem like advanced all-day meetings with fanfare. What many organizations do not fully appreciate is the investment required to pull off such an orchestrated affair.

Organizations considering conducting kaizen events must be ready to make a significant commitment to change management by properly preparing attendees for the expectations of the event, executing the event smoothly and implementing solutions developed during the event in a timely and effective manner.

Blended Learning: The Future of Lean Six Sigma Training

Sponsor Message

In recent years, Lean Six Sigma deployments have turned to Blended Learning - a training model that combines online and classroom components - as a way to continue to execute a high-quality LSS program without sacrificing time and money. In response to this shift, MoreSteam.com has published The Blended Learning Playbook, the first and only practical guide dealing with the design and implementation of Blended Learning specifically for LSS training.

The playbook details how LSS deployments are successfully using Blended Learning to halve training and travel costs, increase the number of Belt trainees, and improve material retention and student satisfaction. This practical guide describes the basics of Blended Learning, covers best practices for the design of a blended model, and includes case studies from eleven organizations. Visit MoreSteam.com to learn more and download a playbook excerpt.

Recent Quality Discussions

Adjusting Control Limits
I have some data for which IMR charts are being developed. In looking at residuals (average minus observed data) for over 1,000 data points, I found that the kurtosis is almost 13.5, thus the data is not considered by me to normally distributed, yet that is an assumption for the IMR charts (right?).

"Should I make some sort of adjustment to the UCL and LCL for this case so that the traditional probability of finding outliers is retained?

Six Sigma and Transportation
I was wondering if anyone has used the Six Sigma methodologies in a transportation setting? I have seen this used in a manufacturing setting before and was wondering if this could be applied to the movement of freight. I am interested to see if certification would be beneficial for me.

Significance Testing for Poisson Data
I have three sets of Poisson data and I need to test whether there is a significant difference between the three sets. The data is clearly Poisson, so using a normal approximation is out of the question. Any thoughts on doing an ANOVA type analysis, but with the severely skewed count data? 93% of the counts are 0 just to give you an idea.

Investment Banking Projects
I have recently joined an investment banking back-office division in the Operational Excellence group. We are responsible for driving process optimization projects, among other things. Would someone be able to provide me with project ideas that are typically driven in an IB environment?

Changing Pail Process Parameters
We have recently introduced IML for pails and have found that during drop tests the pails split up the label seam. What process parameters (mold temp, cooling time, fill rate, etc) might be modified to address this problem? Given IML pails are in the marketplace today, someone must have encountered and addressed this issue.
