Select Projects Using Evaluation and Decision Tools

Across all industries, there is one area of Six Sigma that can mean the difference between success and failure of deployment: project selection. Whether the method is used in manufacturing or service organizations, the future of a deployment is always influenced by the quality of project selection.

Project selection typically starts with generating ideas. The biggest challenge is to select the ideas that have the highest chance of becoming beneficial projects. To help in this process, practitioners can use an organized approach for narrowing down and moving forward with the ideas that can be best converted into projects.

Data Required to Pull Projects
I had to pull the project no-start card several times and each time, I backed up the decision with data. These sponsors saw the light and reformulated their requirements.

T or ANOVA
I am afraid that you have some basic misunderstandings that this site is not intended to fix. The null for ANOVA is mu1=mu2=mu3 with the alternate usually that at least one is different. It is a singular comparison of the three population means from which the three samples came from.

"The t test you are attempting to do is mu1=m2 and then mu2=mu3 and then mu1=mu3. That is not the same problem.

As-Is Process Map
The process improvement team is currently in the 'Define' stage of Six Sigma, so we are attempting to capture the current state of a process in an effort to identify possible critical to quality elements that offer improvement opportunties. We conducted an audit on the process to capture the current state using an 80/20 rule to isolate the actions that occurs frequently (in other words, this process does not appear to be highly varied). From your comments, you mention that our Project Lead has chosen not to produce a traditional 'as-is' process map. Perhaps I should begin by asking why because I find it difficult to understand why a Six Sigma project team would use a 'should be' process map to determine strategic improvement areas. Do you have any other helpful recommendations? Thank you!

The Customer Isn't Always Right
Even if he were my customer, the customer may not always be asking the right questions to truly gain what they are seeking. So if they ask for either A or B and I truly understand that what they need is C how have I served them by staying only within the choices they have laid out?

Percentages Understandable
A major part of process improvement is communication, which is why I tend to use percentages when talking to people outside of a core group of people as this is what people understand. "On the question of using sigma score on continuous data - you can predict the outcome from the data, etc. once you have a score you can always translate it back into a percentage to allow people to undertsand it.
