Hello All,
I have been given the opportunity to study Gauge R&R / Six sigma. I only have a basic idea of what these are and cannot find out much info without paying first. Before i agree to something i may not find to be in my capabilites, what exactly are these two subjects? How long can training last for? Are they worth it on a personal qualification point of view? And most of all, is everyone capable of using both tools? I dont want to accept these courses and be absolutely useless. Any help? Chris.

Yes. Gauge R&R is worth only. Since measurement system can be source for variation. What if your mesurement system shows that all good products as bad one.

@cjbobo Chris – This section of articles on measurement system analysis/Gage R&R on iSixSigma.com may help you: http://www.isixsigma.com/tools-templates/measurement-systems-analysis-msa-gage-rr/

Also, if you’re asking about using Six Sigma in general, we have a section for those who are New to Six Sigma that should also help: http://www.isixsigma.com/new-to-six-sigma/

Of-course Gauge R&R (Repeatability and Reproducibility) part of Six sigma is absolutely necessary to find out the measurement system variation. Given opportunity then go for it @cjbobo Chris. Six sigma is like ocean many things are there to study hence it is sub-divided into Awareness, proficient and expert (Green Belt, Black Belt and Master Black Belt). And its 100% worth for personal qualification point of view.

Here’s one way of looking at it. Specifically, this need be directed to a business case, so it’s important to put some dollars and “sense” (pun fully intended) to the matter. GAGE (not Gauge) R&R provides the opportunity to reduce the business risk of accepting failed components as good, and passing components that are not to specification. HOW? Gage R&R provides a means to tell you two things: variation in your measurement methods and operators.

As others have pointed out, it’s a fantastic tool for reducing variation in your measurement system, but this should shed some light on the business based need for performing such analysis. The calculations can be rather encumbering, however, so use of a statistical software package should help greatly when performing your analysis.

One common mistake, however, is in failing to keep sample groupings consistent (i.e. if you have N = 35…don’t let them get lost in the production population…keep an eye on them!) and random – this CAN be a bit of a pain, but is a necessary evil when performing this analysis.

Good luck with your analysis.
