I am currently a Minitab user and have been very happy with the software. My company is changing over to JMP software and is expecting all Minitab users change over to JMP. I am not familiar with the software – can anyone comment as to what the strengths and weaknesses of the JMP software is? Also, what does Minitab do significantly better and what challenges should we expect in the transition? Any feedback is appreciated.
I’ve recently experienced the opposite – I was raised on JMP and now must use Minitab. They’re pretty similar; if you’re good at Minitab, JMP should be pretty easy to pick up. Only big difference is Minitab spits out so many bells & whistles with each analysis technique. JMP requires you to LOOK at your data a little more than Minitab, but you should do that anyway (my opinion)!
Personally, I think JMP forces you to understand the topics and spits out less garbage than Minitab does. However, they both have about the same functionality when you learn the methods. If you write a lot of macros in Minitab, there could be a learning curve switching over to JMP. However, my favorite part of JMP is the ability to “roll-up” the data very easily – the summary functions for rolling up COV studies is a piece of cake in JMP; quite a bit more straight-forward than Minitab.

I have used both extensively, and both are extremely powerful. A great feature that JMP has is that the graphs and data tables are dynamically linked. You can create subsets of data by double clicking a segment of a histogram. You can “lasso” points on a chart that are PROVEN to be outliers, and exclude them and replot the data. JMP scripting is also great. With minitab, you can save all your analyses as one project and pick up where you left off. Really nice feature. JMP can handle larger files as far as I know.
In addtion to the dynamic link between the data and the graphs, It is very easy to model data (either passive or active data, either attribute or variable responses) using only one function, which is the “Fit Model” function.You can also easily edit the graphs (histograms, variability charts) to put in your target, upper or lower spec lines.
