| Don Strayer @Straydog Reputation - 11 Rank - Aluminum | Six Sigma is about continual improvement of quality. Lean is about continual reduction of the sources of waste. Defects (quality) is one of the major sources of waste. Others that are most often considered are over-production, excess inventory, waiting, transportation, movement, and over-processing. There is a correlation since defects may increase other sources of waste and the other sources of waste may increase opportunities for defects. Lean Six Sigma recognizes this correlation, that measurement and analysis identifies multiple sources of waste, and that the organization benefits by reducing all of them. So the trend is toward LSS. I assume that you are talking about marketability of skills. There is still a place for quality assurance and quality management specialists but we are expected to have broader expertise. Lean toward lean. It is equally important to become an expert in a particular industry. Businesses tend to prefer an MBA with Lean SS training over an SSBB without an MBA. Engineeriing firms tend to prefer someone with an engineering degree. The health care industry almost requires some sort of health care degree. |
