Airline Industry – Six Sigma

The troubled Airline industry is a classic example that solidifies the fact that Six Sigma can do wonderful things for your bottom line… until gas prices rise dramatically or other market variables change and offset the Six Sigma savings.I know of only three Fortune 500 Airline companies that are using Six Sigma:

Delta Air Lines
Southwest Airlines
US Airways Group

Outside the Fortune 500 there are quite a few examples of Six Sigma in the Airline Industry. Many of these companies are GE Aircraft Engines “At the Customer for the Customer” clients:

Air Canada, America West, Qantas Airlines, Air France, Air New Zealand, All Nippon Airways, Atlantic Southeast Airlines (Delta sub), British Airways, China Airlines, Emirates Airline, Japan Airlines, Thai Airways

Alaska Air Bag Guarantee is a “paper tiger” unless they use “Gemba – Clocks” that measure the actual arrival time of the Aircraft vs. the 20 minute Guarantee. Then, they should have Agents passing out free Bag Vouchers when time guarantees are missed to pax.
