    For example, effort estimation model could be based on Function point estimation method or organization wide complexity based on size estimation. For a new proposal, the effort estimation will be done by the size of the project in terms of function point multiplied by productivity factor (# Hours per function point).
    The effort prediction model may be based of the historical data of effort distribution of the project in various phases of SDLC. Depending on the effort spent on requirement phase, based on the effort estimation model, one will be able to predict wheather the project will be completed in the budgeted effort. If the prediction model tells the project manager that the project will not be completed in the budgeted effort then the project manager is expected to take corrective action in subsequent phases of SDLC so that the project will be completed in the stipulated effort.

    The effort estimation and effort prediction models are used at different times is SDLC. The Effort estimation models are typically used when you are preparing for a response to the proposal. The efforts are estimated based on the requirements provided by the customer.
    The effort prediction models are used while you are in different stages of the SDLC. For example, at the end of the requirement phase the effort prediction model should tell you whether you will be able to complete the project in stipulated effort or not. The effort prediction model may have paramaters such as work accomplished, scope creep, team skills available etc.
    Both these models alothough tries to calculate effort but the parematers based on which the efforts are calculated are different.

    Six Sigma and CMMI has to go hand in hand. CMMI provides a road map as how to proceed to higher maturity levels while six sigma gives tools and techniques to reach there faster.
    Six sigma projects should be done under the umbrella of CMMI. The results of various six sigma projects should be shared within the organization so that other projects can quickly benefit using the results of the Six sigma projects.
    Six sigma can be be closely related to CMMI – level 4 – Quntitatively Managed Process Area. Each six sigma projects typically falls under the Quantitative Project Managerment.
    Apart from typical software development projects, Six sigma can also be applied to HR, Admin, Finance department to streamline the processes.

    It is difficult to tell the differences between CMM and Six Sigma. CMM provides a roadmap of achieving software maturity, while six sigma provides a tool set of process improvement. Six sigma methodology provides a structured problem solving approach. CMM tells you the gaps in your processes to become a “matured” organization. If both these initiatives go hand in hand in the same direction then the organization will benefit the most.
    CMM is typically done to assess the organization maturity, while six sigma projects are undertaken to improve / strengthen / smoothen the processes. It concentrates on one pain are and tries to solve the problem.
    CMM assessment is a strategic organizational decision, needs commitment from the entire organization. Six sigma can be an organizational initiative or can be a group or business unit initiative. It helps is resolving pain areas using systematic problem solving methodology. There is no hard and fast rule as which one to use. Some times it is client driven initiative, sometimes it is senior management mandate.
