Would it be possible to determine without the raw data somehow?  This question was in some training material but the data is not there.
    Thanks!

HornJM,  frankly I expected a better articulated answer from your side. Instead, again just declamations …    “Us SixSigma goobers …”  “…based on our experience …”  ‘us’, ‘our’ … Are you the formal spokesman(woman) of SixSigma world ?

HornJM,  you are absolutely right, Mr Carnell talked …
So, we have from one side an article and from opposide an answer …
No data from both … just declamations … and self references …
So, how we can evaluate who is right ?
PS. I’m not Dr. Burns’s friend.

Mr. Carnell, you did exactly the same thing.  No data in your message and advertise yourself to sell your products. Only the products are different (comparative advertising).

Maybe just because sixsigma (business) don’t like challeng is one of the reason of why it is not the “best” process improvement . Isn’t the process improvement a continue challenge with actual processes in place ?
Please never forget   … nothing is so good that it cannot be made better … (thinking adopted in toyota, if I remeber well)

8D is a general purpose root cause analysis process to follow, where isn’t specified which tools to use, so following 8D you can use Shainin or whatever method you believe is proper for the scope.
Shainin process guide you through a specific, effective problem solving method.
What is the best ? Both, because they can be the same.
For the specific problems you said, start to use Shainin.

If make sense RTY for plant, depend by KPIs you defined. How calculate it depend by your plant organization, anyway, RTY for plant can use the same formula of any RTYs, if necessary you can weight different processes.

There are 2 point in my answer, in point two there is the explanation on why his boss is right. Try to do an effort and read entire answer.
If you have time, try to think and let me know if you haven’t never done what your boss want.

Follow your QA for two reason :

    He is your boss;
His calculations are based on “estimated yield = e^DPU” from a  poisson based defect distribution

Take a look at ISO standards and you’ll find the same sixsigma tools. Just written in different way (less emphasis).

    Great advise !
So, if you have the right sponsorship from top mgt, the right players in the team and right projects selected, sixsigma cannot fail.
    Great advise !

Does it make sense for me to use the Xbar/s chart given a population mean or is this only valid for samples? Thanks

Yes. We found that that was what it took to give metrics the attention they needed. A caveat is that we also allow staff to participate in the text that accompanies the metrics so they have some input into the interpretation.

Thanks for your feedback everyone. I read your posts and I am going to stick with step 1 for now – plotting the existing data and process variation. My mean is much smaller than my standard deviation (about 1/3), and I am using ‘mean +- 2s’ to define the UCL and LCL. The LCL brings me below 0. The values vary from a few minutes to several hundred hours. Is it possible to define an LCL given these values, even after Tequila?

    Misc33,
I’m about to do the same evaluation. Would you be able to post a list of companies that you did your review of? Thanks so much!

I’d like to receive a copy of your survey forms also. Can you send them to me or post them on this forum so I can download them. I’d prefer to download them.
    Thanks so much!
