    CM,
I’m not sure why you would be so critical of MC sharing one experience.  Keep in mind these are quick posts done on a voluntary basis either in between VA (hopefully, LOL) work or our personal time.
I don’t think sharing one story makes it just an opinion.  I have never seen anyone give a whole treatise in this forum.
    A well told sto…[Read more]

    Mike,
Before I read your first post in this thread, I thought you were a man who had an intellect that was characterized by integrity and agility. Your two recent posts by contrast express an embarrasing parochialism, self-aggrandizement and lack of professionalism: The word “idiot” to describe a rival consultant by a well-known consulta…[Read more]

    Mike,
Interesting how your one case review of project turnaround time compares to every SS company that I have reviewed in the past: Projects get done at the end of the year to make the goal. So, there must be a little more to it than just “an iditiot” standing in front of the class telling everyone how difficult change is. So, I guess it is…[Read more]

Dont know how those replications in numbers occured. CM

  • CM replied to the topic Line Balancing in the forum General 17 years, 4 months ago

This is a very lengthy reply. My apologies for the rambling !!The only purpose of a buffer is to protect the bottleneck (and therefore the line) from getting affected by interruptions. Ideally, we would like to have a buffer ONLY in front of the bottleneck. But this is not always possible and we will see buffers between many stations in a line.…[Read more]

    Ken:
I guess the strategic stock is otherwise called the “buffer” in front of the bottleneck?
So, why would’nt Lean principles consider the TOC logic and avoid balancing lines?

  • CM replied to the topic Line Balancing in the forum General 17 years, 4 months ago

    Ken:
I have a fairly good understanding of TOC. But I am not into TOC accounting or tools like the Reality Tree or the Cloud.
Mr.IAM, regarding your question, it is true that the rate of production should satisfy the market’s demand. But it is not necessary for all workstations to be working at this rate. If the bottleneck machine can perform…[Read more]

    Ken:
No, I am more in favor of the TOC concepts. Irrespective of whether we balance a line or not, the line will always be affected by Statistical Fluctuations and will only be as good as its bottleneck. So, if the line has just got one bottleneck that does not move around (which is made possible by unbalancing the line), then it becomes so much…[Read more]

Chris:We assemble glass units on patio doors. Could you please brief me on different types of protective films available and their cost differences. If it can offset our remake charges, that is certainly a good option. Thanks

    Hello All:
I appreciate the overwhelming response. Let me explain why I wanted to calculate DPMO in the first place. We set out a quality level goal (ratio of good to bad products) for the organization. This goal was based more on intuition. However, on seeing that none of the departments could reach the goal over a period of time, we thought it…[Read more]

  • CM replied to the topic Defining an opportunity in the forum General 17 years, 4 months ago

Thank you all. I still have some doubts about opportunities. We have a production process where a product is built in a single piece flow concept. Parts add on at every work station and the final product comes out at the end of the line. There are 8 work stations in the line. Glass (2 pieces) is installed at station 6 by 2 different operators (1…[Read more]

Thanks EdG and Emily….I will look into those resources.
We are planning to train management and supervision on “Problem Solving” skills using the DMAIC approach as the base philosophy. We cover a wide range of employees from IT, HR, Sales, Payroll, Production, and Customer Service. I am looking for DMAIC examples or case studies that pertain to…[Read more]

  • Hello SSG and Mehta:
Thanks for the info and sorry for getting back late. We would like to have a SOP or job sheet (as called in our organization) for every operator to standardize his/her job activity. This is being created in an effort to let employees know what is expected of them in their day to day activities. To keep it simple, we would…[Read more]

  • Bareback Rider,
To MBB or not to MBB may after all depend on the competency of the MBB. MBB’s may really make a difference in the project success. If you have the data and will like to make an ANOVA comparison that could give you some significance difference. Bare in mind your sample size, alpha and Power if your test.

  • CM replied to the topic 4.5 sigma? in the forum General 19 years, 4 months ago

Wow.  These guys really get worked up about their sigmas!  Responses seem to cover the range from concerned to angry to ridiculously paranoid.
In many ways, the whole concept of shift is something of a philosophy…processes over time don’t tend to function like they do today.  Mikel Harry gave the estimate of 1.5 sig for this shift, and Mi…[Read more]

  • I am not familiar with Royonics, but I used DITMCO which I think is similar. We spent a lot of time creating rules for part storage in the bins. For example, we decided that like parts could not be stored in adjacent bins. So we would group either dissimilar bodies or sizes adjacent to one another. We had similar rules for the IC sequencer.

    We…[Read more]
