    Sheri,
We are now investigating this as a potential green belt project. Did you work this project? Any lessons learned? Any luck with benchmarking?

    Sheri,
I have some information from an acute care hospital in Ohio. Annual hospital stats are: 56,000 patient days, excluding nursery; 4,300 deliveries; 13,700 admissions; and 180,000 outpatient visits.
The data is somewhat dated but I hope it is helpful.
2000  51 incidents  10 were paid out at $1,444 total
    2001 36 incidents   9 were paid at $4,898 total
    2002  28 incidents  6 were paid at $1520 total
Most common were dentures ($800-$1500) and glasses ($200-$400)
I do not have data for this year but I have been told that we started to make the departments financially responsible for payment instead of Risk Management. Lo and behold, there has been signifcant reduction.
Some of the data noise can be attributed to false claims on jewelry. We ask that jewelry loss be reported to the local police dept. Many drop it when this is requested.
We replace dentures, glasses, and prosthetics. All personal items are kept at own risk and they sign a waiver.

    Sai,
Six Sigma applications are becoming more common in clinical biology areas and healthcare. I work for Mount Carmel Health. We have deployed Six Sima as our formal toolbox to permanently solve the business processes that challenge our healthcare system. The opportunitinies are vast. BMG is the company that helped with our training and deployment. They may be able to provide applications and references for you as well.

Thank you for your input. We are going to try calculating average cost of treatment per day. It is amazing at times how data poor we are in such a data rich environment as healthcare.
