Eoin replied to the topic GRR – prove significant improvement in the forum General 13 years, 4 months ago
Hi StefanIf you remeasure your components and recalculate
your process capability index (Pp or Ppk) you will/
should see and improvement in it – it will increase
– as the contribution to the overall variation
observed made by the measurement system variation
decreases. This will also result in a narrower
tolerance interval.…[Read more] -

I agree – in all humility – I think it may help
maintain the credibility of the forum. It is an

Eoin replied to the topic Six Sigma for operator level in Factory environment in the forum General 13 years, 4 months ago
Hello – To echo the sentiments of the previous
responses visual tools are very useful and can be
effective. Operators can make excellent
contributions to teams (there is a data driven
approach to help determine the team make up based
on the type of issues you face – more another day
on this). Undoubtedly communication is a key…[Read more] -
Eoin replied to the topic Teaming GBs on GB Certification Projects in the forum General 13 years, 10 months ago
For what its worth… I totally agree it needs to be an individual certification. Certification based on a group project is a cop out on behalf of the individuals being certified and the consultant.
Best of luck, Eoin -
Eoin replied to the topic Lean or Kaizen? in the forum General 13 years, 11 months ago
Rough and tough translation: Kaizen: Kai – continuous Zen: good
Kaizen is “continuous improvement”. Essentially they are the same thing. Kaizen events are focused events bringing about improvment to an area in a short period time. The terms have become confused but essentially they are the same thing. -
Eoin replied to the topic BB/GB required for career progression. Good or Bad? in the forum General 13 years, 11 months ago
Involve finance in defining and measuring projects and the returns claimed. Like it or not $ is language of business. Six Sigma is good for career progression not because of certificates but because it allows candidates for promotion describe a situation or task or process that could be improved, the actions they took and the results they got.…[Read more]

Eoin replied to the topic Cpk and Percent defective in the forum General 13 years, 11 months ago
Capability indices were developed as a useful way to indicate the exisiting capability of a process and the opportunity for improvement. They are easy to calculate and they allowed disimilar processes to be easily compared. But they have significant short comings that are often over looked. For example sample size has a significant impact. Using…[Read more]

It sounds like you have created a great place to work. Well done. Have you done any benchmarking? (see great placetowork.com It might be interesting). By the way what business are you in?

Eoin replied to the topic % film thickness uniformity control chart in the forum General 13 years, 11 months ago
using control charts you can distinguish between common and special cause variation. From what you have said I do not see any reason why you cannot use an individuals chart in this case. However in the case where there is high uniformity in you sample the data may tend towards zero. Practically speaking though an I-chart should work fine when…[Read more]

Eoin replied to the topic Probability Calculation in the forum General 13 years, 11 months ago
Hello,
I think that you could consider calcualting a tolerance interval of the form x-bar +/- ks. The factor k is not a trivial calcuation. There is an ISO standard ISO 16269-6:2005 that gives tables. It allows you to state that you are a certain level of confidence that a certain proportion of data is in a certain range. For example that 95% c…[Read more] -
Eoin replied to the topic Confidence Levels and Probability in the forum General 13 years, 11 months ago
Hello there – you could construct a confidence interval for the mean:
x-bar +/- Z alpha/2 * (SD/ root n)
SD = standard deviation
root n is the square root of 150
from memory Z alpha/2 for 95% confidence is 1.96 (i.e. 2.5 % each side). This will give you a range of exexpected values i.e. you can expect the mean, with 95% confidence to be w…[Read more] -

Eoin replied to the topic Effectiveness of lean sigma in the forum General 14 years, 10 months ago
Hello – thank you very much for your reply. I am investigating a model by which I can jude the effectiveness of a lean sigma or a six sigma programe. What do people consider to be “effective” i.e what is a reasonably good 6sigma programme, what equates to an ok deployment, a poor deployment or conversely an exceptional deployment (…[Read more]

Thank you very much for your reply. My question is though – how do You measure the effectiveness of Your six sigma programme?
For example if you are the owner of a company and you agreed to investing in the deployment of a six sigma programme pogramme how would you measure its effectivness?
How would you know that the fruits of six sigma are…[Read more] -
