    This is a good example to use Taguchi’s paramter design. Water, Organic solvent and acid are used for control parameters and time, temprature are used as noise factors.  With proper design you can get results with few experiments.
    Read any book on that subject to get the insights

    Taguchi’s S N ratio are meant to improve and optimize the whole process.  Therefore smaller the better, larger the better type of problems do need continuous variables. 
    I saw in Phadke’s book other S N ratios are discussed such as fraction defective and ordered categorical.  where discrete response can be used.  You can try that for your problem

    The pooled factors are used to estimate error variance.
    Degrees of freedom for total sum of squares = sum of degrees of freedom for the various factors + degrees of freedom for the error.
    Some factors do not have large effect on experiment.  Therefore those factors are pooled together and considered as error vaiance.

    I personaly use it for system testing of communication products.  I like it because it gives full test script.  Some colleague use it rdexpert for integration testing and some in development area also use it.
    My manager likes it because the test plan review meetings are short and productive.

    In my company, Dr. Phadke gave a course. so we knew it in 1995.  But it was tedious to use orthogonal arrays.  Our manager got rdExpert tool. to make it easy  and we love it.
