Some MBB differentiates between the basic tools and advanced tools such as Multi variate analysis, design of experiment especially 3 D design optimization, cluster analysis but it all depends on what is the problem and how we want to approach the same.
I do agree with this view, my experience in leading Six Sigma as well as Lean in couple of organizations, tell me that if we try to resolve all our process issues with Six sigma, then we may not get best result always, the methodology (Kaizen, JIT, DMAIC or DFSS) must be selected based on project scope, type and timelines. Six Sigma helps in better management of Continuous Improvment Projects. It is framework for effective project and team management. It has certain miles in each phase which bring culture of discipline.
FMEA, QFD can be used as stand alone tools for specific purpose but they may make positive impact towards overall excellence in the organization.
Kaizen and workout are very different tool
Workout (conceptualized at GE) is basically tool for brainstorming and idea generation. the output of Workout session may be # of Kaizen ideas.
