Slight disconect what u have said is partially true, but in case of  ISO 9001:2000 process maps are the backbone.U can also now document the entire process /operation in terms of flow chart, which was earlier not acceptable to some people.

    Hi Meggie,
I would still suggest as Mike as said in his reply , it is better to have a Q.A system in place in order to effectively utilise the benefit of six sigma

You can implement Six Sigma in a software orgn very easily if it is having a maturity level of 5.In a level 5 company the metrices are already laid down the processes mapped hence Six Sigma can be very implemented very fast

Sorry folks I forgot to mention that I am from India and Infosys is an Indian IT company also the book that I have mentioned is by an Indian Author that may not be available at places outside India. It is very well written with live examples/templates on IT projects at Infosys, the author  was on deputation from IIT Kanpur to Infosys.

CMMI is a more comprehensive version of CMM, If one seriously implements  follows CMMI at Level 5 it basically leads to the gains that can be achieved through Six Sigma.Six Sigma follows a project approach while CMMI follows the traditional approach of doing it across the company wide but in CMMI one can do process wise like peeling an onion leaving the core the same.Request you to pl see the website of SEI CMU and also read some books like one written by Pankaj Jalota- Infosys and others.Although this book is written on CMM but it tells you all about the implementation at Infosys.

Pl excuse my grammatical errors as I had replied to the query very late in the night and I was about to leave my desk.Basic intention was not to critise any quality concept Six Sigma is definately better than other standards /concepts since it focusses on projects in a achievable manner while ISO and CMMI (intergrated ) are across the company at the same time ,they are massive team efforts require huge amount of co-ordination,commuinication and off course implemention, its simply massive. For any Quality concept to suceeed what ultimately matters is the importance given to it by the Top Mgmt like in case of Six Sigma in GE the amount of attention given to it by Jack Welch was phenomenal (refer books on Jack Welch available in the market). In India since the environment is not that competetive Indian companies do not pay that much attention on customer and quality.(the word quality includes not only producy quality but also service quality although some people still confuse it only with product quality).By the Way Toyota does not follow Six Sigma but has overtaken other automobile companies and is 3rd largest in the world and is inching very close to Ford………………

    Hi
No here to critise any standard but as practioner of all three qlty concepts ISO specially the 2000 version focusses on continous improvement it no longer only talks about doing what is documented it also talks about validating what is being and follow the QMS process model for improvement, similarly CMMI (CMM intergrated new version of CMM ) if one implements in spirit with proper mertics it will be akin to Six Sigma implementation. The tools used in Six (most of them ) are tools that are already in use in the Quality field.Of course Six Sigma is benefial because it focusses on small projects intially low hanging later on to bigger projects.

ISO- is a set of genric guidelines laid down by International Standards Organization. It focusses on a framework for continual improvement thru documentation, audits and action taken on the audit points.
CMM is the slightly at higher level than ISO appilcable to the IT industry, same as ISO but more focus on IT sector not generic.
Six Sigma is 70% old wine in new bottle consists of quality tools but focusses more on improvement in systematic manner. It basically adds up to using tools and techniques in a result oriented manner.

I fully agree any given day SS is better in terms of investment recovered as well as the involvement and commitment from the top management with out which any quality initative is bound to fail / not achieve its intented goal and cause discomfort to all and everyone.

I totally disagree with Jim it is not a question degrading ISO 9000 or supporting six sigma.ISO 9000 is a quality management system std, since it is generic std it allows lot of freedom in its implementation but if properly utilised it is the foundation stone for improvement (refer earlier reply by Garry). There were some drawbacks in the ISO 9000:1994 but they have been removed in ISo 9001:2000 version .Six Sigma is basically a tool for improvement for a particular product/ process and can be or should be used along with ISO 9001.But since ISO 9001 involves the entire company and integration of various depts its effect is not seen immediately .Over all I think as mentioned above one is QMS and the other is Tool for improvement. This is not to critise any of them since I have knowldege of both .
