    I have a querry. There are 10 samples drawn from a batch. The USL is 105% & LSL is 95%. An individual sample can be in the range of 90-110%. %RSD NMT 6%. What is the process sigma?

    Hi Westfield,
    The project which i am doing is based on student satisfaction of all the faciltities at the centre/institute. If the students are satisfied then through their good will they will ask their friends to enroll in this institute, thus in turn increasing the revenue of the centre/institute.
    For this we had conduted a feedback of 15 students of a class 3 months ago to check the satisfaction level. with the followingΒ points Faculty Knowledge, Presentation Skills, Puntuality, Machine Availability, Lab Instructor availability, Internet connectivity, Books given to students (courseware), Library Books.
    Each point had to be givenΒ  marks from 2 to 10 (2 been least and 10 mac). The min satisfaction level identified was 70%.
    In the 1st feedback we had a aggregate satisfaction level of 54.36% which was very below the min level. To improve the satisfaction level we took all corrective actions for the above points.
    Another feedback was taken last week with the same 15 students and covering the same points. Now the aggregate satisfaction level has shot up to 72.18%.and the revenue by 20%.
    My question is how do i prove it statistically that there was sufficient improvement. What statistical test should i use to prove it. If i am using the proportion test (p test) because the results are in percentage, Β then what value should be x in the formula.
    Kindly help me in this as i am not able to prove it statistically.

    yes that could be SIPOC or activity diagram ,sequence diagram (UML
    diagrams) depending on which one capturing your process best.
    here i guess activity will work with swimlane representation in it.
    And time line is how much time is it taking for a every member/Actor
    in the process for a activity.
    you can find these diagram easily on the internet.Hope it will help.

    I am familiar to your situation, I may not be able to help you
    completely but I can show you a way to do it. There are two ways to
    perform the task you described 1. Read the required data by human eyes from the image or PDF
    file you received and fill it in. 2. Copy the data from that input file (image, PDF) file and paste it
    in some application which inserts the data in database.
    i think you must be following the 1st method and thatΒ’s why you
    need one V.V. per 5-6 agents, also there must be some accuracy
    level and visibility condition specified in SLA. If you need to
    implement six sigma processes then you will have to start
    measuring (one of the phase in Six sigma) the output for errors per
    batch and errors per person or agents. You need to form a process
    diagram with time lines associated with it and improve that process
    by where ever required depends on what you have found in your
    measure phase. Reducing the number of V.Vs can be possible only
    when you change the process. if you use second method described
    above, you will be able reduce VVs but for this method you will
    require some tool like Β“ABBYYΒ” for data generation.

    BTDT, I am not sure I understand that the forecast distribution will be a summation of the interarrival distribution and the pass through time distribution…..and how to extract the departure rate from this.
    Had this problem been deterministic, say an interarrival time of 0.25 minutes ( 4 arrivals per minute), and a pass through time of 5 minutes, how will the sum (0.25+5 OR 4+1/5) help in calculating departure rate? Intutively we understand that in this case, during the first five minutes, there will be no departures. But once the 5 minutes warm up is over, we will expect the departure rate to equal the arrival rate at the other end…ie…4 per minute.

    Thanks BTDT….but even for simulating, I need to have a formula for creating the “forecast”. While I do have the “assumptions” (arrival rate and passthrough time distribution), I am not sure how to formulate the forecast(departure).

    What I suggest is that you first look at the 7 basic Six Sigma tools ( also called Soft tools sometime)Β like Thought Process map, SIPOC, Process Mapping, C&E analysis, FMEA ,Root cause analysis and control plan and then examine how relevent it is to your process or Product that youΒ  are trying to improve, This tools are available online and anyone can develop a good understnad just by reading through and involoving your team in an workout.

    Eric,
    Gage R&R is not independent of part variation. IfΒ  you refer to any typical gauge R&R analysis output, you will come across the “percentage contribution to total variation”Β section.Β which is nothing but the contributionΒ due to theΒ measurement system (Total Gage R&R) and part to part variation. It is Ideal to have less the 7% as total gage R&R and consequently 93% or more part-to- part variation.
    Also, while performing gage R&R its imperative that we should include the actual parts to be measured (and not measuring gage blocks). One should include the parts from entire range to capture the total part variation.
    So, I would say that the customer is correct when he is asking you to measure the actual part being produced.

    Let me start by appreciating the way you have outlined your requirement, crisp & clear. ( Clarity precedes success).
    All earlier suggestions are valid & important.
    I woudl like to suggest that go ahead with the No. 3 option but do the branstorming sessions with your engineers, developers to identigy the re-work, revalidation, debugging issues. Identify ways to digitize most of your work with the help of the Ground 0 staff rather than the process owners as they may not be aware of the real time issues & wastes in the development cycle.
    Use online surveys form for your internal/external customer for collecting the VOC. I perceive that medium of survey is not a great challenge but the questionaire & raw facts to be articulated & collected, needs lot of thinking. At times, we only want to ask questions where we know result may be neutral or positive. Β

    Though I am still a student of SS but would like to share few real time experience. I do not have an article, link ..etc to support but if this info helps.
    At an Executive level, I think there are key things which you are supposed to consider before you even propose a strategic execution of the process improvement philosphy inΒ any organization:
    1. Monetary Benefit.
    2. Domains which are out of control & desparately need a fix
    3.Cost of deployment or Return on investment.
    After you are convinced that you will be meeting all the key elements, you decide on the best Quality concept which will enhance the production as well as become a value add inΒ your business prepositions. However, there are factors like: Who would be the chosen ones who will drive the projects? WhoΒ will be the chosen ones who will be nominated for the Black belt training? Who will be the sponsoring the projects? Β Who will take the credit for the success of the projects, Champion or the Master Black BeltΒ….?
    There are times when you should also strategize where you need not run a project & do away with simple TQM techniques to save on the cost & time. ThatΒ’s when at an Executive level you would prioritize the task with the doable tools & cost benefit analysis. As discussed earlier, few of the projects are put on hold as the requirement of the project as defined in the Charter has changed due to the new specifications of customer or supplier. There is a new management, which is still deciding on the expected gains as partners with your firm. Your team members have found a better way to do the same thing, Data collection technique needs to be revised as you were collecting irrelevant data for the desired result. When you have entered into industry, which has its own best practices to rectify the same defects, When senior managementΒ’s focus has changed from cost reduction to the domain dominance in the market. Etc. etc.
    Β Quoting examples from Allied, GE, Motorola, all of them have learnt, built & redesigned the way they use SS for improvement which is not posiible without using different approaches to solve the same situations in their own areas. In other words, you need to take bold steps ofΒ changing the outlook of a particular project or the expected gain, experimenting with the new tools, softwares to beat the time taken for completion..etc. Β Β

    Hi Cosmos,
    In order to find the drivers for satisfaction levels in different segments of your business, you may calculate the Top 2 Box % which is the percent of customer(from diff.segments) who are somewhat satisfied with your services. As per the data given, which comes to 83% & your Bottom Top 2 Box % is only 7%. You would like to capture the comments from various segments & then use that data as Voice of the customer to identify the specific requirements of different groups (within that 7% dissatisfied) toΒ define yourΒ Critical to Quality(CTQ) factors. You may also see any correlationΒ  between the Overall Satisfaction with the Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4…etc…As per your data, Q1 correlates with Overall by 70%(very strong positive correlation), which in other words establishes the direct relation of overall satisfaction to the performance as per Q1.
    ask for reasons why yoru customers have given the rating which they have chosen to rate your services. based upon the verbatim analysis, try to find the loop holes in your process by understanding the process flow(SIPOC) & then using pareto analysis to priortise on different reasons significant to improve the overall performance.

    Thanks alok for giving little more information about the process.
    Earlier as the concept of filter was not known to me, hypothesis was that the no. of times your effort may fail; would be the total no. of agents joining your training program. However, if the process of passing an agent involves series of Tests(filters), then you would coin the oppotunities asΒ how many different ways an agent would failΒ the test or would be asked to leave or how many ways you would avoid the defect (attrition). As your definition of Defect is count of Attrition, the opportunities of saving the defects, still remains the headcount of the Β training batch. But if you change the definition of your Defect as ” People who did not pass the training program & were asked to leave, then the opportunity would involve the no. of filters & headcount. Coming back to your manufacturing example, if the product undergoes 4 tests to be certified as “OK” than the total opportunities of error would be No. of Units manufacturedΒ * 4. Hope this clarifies.

    You can do the 2**4 Full factorial design and then plot all the treatment effects(including the interactions) on a normal probability plot. See if any of the variables/interactions are deviating much from the straight line. If there are any, then these are the significant variables/interactions for your model.
    You can also perform ANOVA and then the DMRT(Duncan’s Multiple Range Test) to find out the significant variables and /or interactions.

    Dana,
    I have worked with ACS in Jamaica, Akron as well as India. I was certified a Black Belt through ACS, although they dont have a full fledged program they do have experienced BB’s and MBB’s. As far as my knowledge goes, the ACS sale has been called off and they arent looking in that direction in the near future. I enjoyed my tenure with ACS, though a lot of change management (where SS is concerned) was required in the early stages.
    I was a part of the Commercial Solutions Group, we provided Network and IT solutions for many Fortune 100 clients.
    By the way it’s Affiliated Computer Services (not Systems) :-)

    Its not only your problem.Almost every one who goes for an interview faces such questions like Why do u want to join this course? What is the one thing that attracted you towards this company? etc etc.People at ur age who might not have thought of the same fail to give convincing reply.Its not what u say but how u say matters!!! As they say express ur best!! So try to think of it.Prepare some stuffs prior to any interview for similar kind of GENERAL questions.I am saying it general because these questions are common to most interviews.
    So prepare ur best and Good Luck!!!

    Thanx for your suggestion Robert and McD.But I got a little confused with the replies from both of you.Robert, you are saying that I should screen the variables by running some screen designs.Do you mean that I should not go for the regression analysis and directly go for design of experiments?
    And McD how can I fish out the correlations that is not expected from the first principles?Is it by the methods which I discussed about in my first post?

    Do you have Tollgates in place in your Organisation. Because the project which has cause/solution already known come in low hanging fruit category . You can put such projects in these category and still show it in six sigma value.

    Its Very Simple Logic.
    Any thing that needs to be improved or is critical has to be measured.
    SS BB, GB,MBB are critical Input. Agreed!!!!!!!!
    So they need to be measured.
    Ceritifiction is one of the way but not the only way.
    What ever way we may use. It should be relevant, Accurate, Precise & stable.
    Conclusion BB,GB,MBBΒ Cp Measurement is neccessary not certification.

    Both the analysis is needed . Its not Minor.
    When you declare that organization has lost an amount in past year/s . You signify the chronicity and Weightage of problem on buisness result. And when you give the future prediction then you give rationale and project feasibility. eg. A product which is fast dying out may have given a big loss in prev. year but In next year the gain from project may be minimal. In a similar way a product whose demand has been rising may have big impact in years to come. But it has to be seen that if the problem is persistingΒ  one or a sudden increase in a small period.

    Kathy I’m doing a similar project.My suggestions to your queriesΒ are: Say You want to know reasons fro Terminations… The major reasons could be termination due to Disciplinary action and Performance Issues.Further within disciplinary it could be due to misconduct,pilferage, damage to property…etc. The questionaire thus could be addressed to collect data on thes e issues. More reasons could be found from Exit Interview data if available.Gage R & R would be reqd. for the Tool. Pareto could give major contributors.
