I have done a GB project on “Cycle time reduction in application software development” This may not be applicable to your kind of software. Still you can take away some tips.
For all the software development projects executed in past one year, I collected 1. Scheduled date of completion & 2. Actual date of completion. The delay was due to various reasons in each projects.
The following are the Process Inputs Variables(PIVs) that attributed to the CTQ which in our case was “Ontime delivery of completed applicated software”
    1. Inputs that are required to complete the project
    2. Input availability date
    3. Competence of developer
    4. Similar old projects
    5. Experience of developer
    6. Special features required by customer
    7. Customer approved specifications
    8. Customer initiated changes in specifications
Out of the above, by analysing the data, I identified the Key Process Input Variables(KPIVs) that are causing the delay and designed means for attacking those KPIVs.

Its great to know that the tool is of use to all of you. I dont deserve all the applause as I am not the author of this spreadsheet. Am also a learner…when I came across such a nice tool, I thought it would be great if other members of the community also would love to have this. I believe in knowledge sharing!!! and am open to any kind of discussions on this subject.

    Hi,
You have enormous scope for improvement!!!. You can do Six Sigma projects in any functions of your organization where you or more precisely your customer(both internal and external) faces a problem. Convert his/her problem statements into your process characteristics and identify the root causes for the problems and attack them.
    For example:
1.Reduce time taken for designing a system 2. Reduce errors in Design
    3. Reduce production time 4. Reduce testing time
Start from your external customer. Ask him where you can improve or where he finds a problem with you. Draw your process map from there.
In your type of business which involves trasactioal activities there are lot of scopes for 6 sigma projects
    Hope this helps.
    Netra.

I also work for GE. Its unfortunate that you have not really experienced the benefits of implementing Six Sigma. Looks like you are wrongly motivated by someone or some incident.
Jack and Jeff are no fools to enforce this methodology and ask everyone to spend time on it. It does work for sure. Ofcourse its not the only way..but its defenitely one of the best ways leading to success.

I would suggest you to do a GB project parallely so that you can really make use and understand the tools that you learn thoroughly. Choose a project in your own field where you find a problem …. take up the area where there are needs for improvement. When you start off with a project, you will come up with more questions….when you question more, you learn more…just reading the material and taking up the exams wont help if you really want to explore Six Sigma.
Mail me at [email protected] if you need further help in chosing a project
    Good Luck.
