There are n number sixsigma projects. But the Six sigma project should not be performed for the sake of doing some thing.
I dentify the key issues that burns the money of the organisation and perform the project to solve the issue…
else Identify the process improvement area and try to improve the effeciency of the process…..
Let me give you the realtime example of both the scinario.. We had a situation where we where not able to monitor the calls within 24 hours and dispose the sales. This was the billing issue. We try to analyse what are the key issue and found the accuracy of the database was good.
As a result by solving one of the issue we got the improvement area too. hope you got the idea.

Six sigma is just a methodology that provides with the tools to improve the capability of your business process.
It can be said as a philosophy that gives you an idea to reduce the variation in your activity. and help you in data driven decisions.
Advantages depends on the person who uses that….. Since its a methodology which support your analysis ther is no difference in which industry you are…

If the project is handled by the person got good knowledge in the analysis then you would get good results.

The data given  is not the time taken to close the NC. It is the time taken beyond 30 days to close the NC. Certain numbers would be in -ve which means that the NC is closed before 30 days. There fore total cycle time would be +30 of the “objective failed by”
NC closure on time shows the commitment of the employee and management towards the Quality management system.

If I have 700 defective units and each unit has 10 opportunities to produce a defect, then DPU is 10/700 or should I count the total number of defects and the total number of units?

What do u mean by the defective unit – Is that out of 1000 production 700 product found to be defective.
Let me take the same as the example :

    1000 Units are prepared
    700 found to be defective.
700 product have 10 opportunities each for the failure.
Say as a whole (Assuming each product having at least 2 failure) 1400 Defects identified

Then your defect per unit is Total defects (ie., 1400) divided by Total Unit prepared (ie., 1000).

    = 1400/1000
=1.4 is the Defect per unit.
