That’s right Jim. As deployment manager in a globally spread project environment, I am planning to create a tool that will assess the pilotability of an improvement idea. Some improvement ideas sound good on paper but fail at the pilot stage. Perhaps a decision can be made whether to at all go ahead with the pilot based on the tool assessment. Or perhaps the tool will  throw red alerts that must be managed to ensure that the pilot will not fail. On the same lines, another version of the tool could be used to assess the potential of a successfully piloted idea for actual roll out across geographies/IT environments. This tool is of special significance when you are managing multiple improvement ideas/six sigma projects at the global level. I see it as an enabler – to enable higher success rates in implementation. Useful for Improvement tollgate. Would appreciate your thoughts.

    Dear Newbereal, Nutcase et al,
Obviously you are committed practioners who have been around Six Sigma long enough from your insightful albeit sarcastic comments. Does Six Sigma situation in your company really this dismal and desperate?  It is not a rhetorical question but a real concern for me. Six Sigma was a turning point in my professional life and wasan antidote to corporate cynicism! It is sad to hear waht I hear from you.

Sweety you can find needed literature ont this website so if you go through the content on this wensite that would pretty much answer all your doubts!

    Sweety,
Six in Numbers would be at 6sigma: you would have 3.8 defects for million parts produced.
Or you can say at 6 six sigma a process/product line could have 3.6 defects a for evey million opportunities.
Similarly you can have 5 sigma, 4 sigma………
Not clear what kind of information you are looking at?

    Brit,
We haven’t done any project in particular but we sure did re-write our sitter policy to minimize the expense that occurs due to sitters. Mostly its the staff decision, if they see high-risk/fall patient they request the attending for a sitter order and we changed the sitter policy accordingly but were not able to control any siter hours.
Alternatives considered in order to control the costs included conidering volunteers, family members etc to be sitter, but I dont know that changed anything in the number of hours. Besides that we added some more duties to sitters besides just sitter function.
If you have any other thoughts on trying something new please do share it, we are also facing the problem with the number of hours we add towards sitters.
    Thanks!

I am trying to do a internal check on our reporting w.r.t census points and all. So once I have some of the info I can certainly bring it in so we can have a better idea of what I am trying to accomplish.
About clinical or statistical, what I am trying to do is I am trying to tie in clinical at the same I want to consider statistics too so will it be a possibility?

    Dr.Eugene,
What I am trying to do is to come up with a bed anagement policy which could work/consider all the hospital wide issues. I am just trying to buy in everybody to think of a productive way of handling admissions and also consider staffing levels when admitting a patient to an in-patient unit.
Since the hospital I work with does not have a patient dependency classsification system it is a choas through out all the in-patient units and it’s confusing too for everybody to plan their shift by shift staffing issues.
Any help or comments on this will be much appreciated!

    Amy,
As it has already been suggested breaking down the whole thing it sub projects would be a first phase to start your project with.
But some of the Benchmarks I would consider taking a look at is:
    1. Traige assessment-best practices call for 2-5 minutes so it is always a good start to fix your front end, this part can be one of the sub-projects. But at the same leveraging the rear/back end i.e. physicians to see the patients fast would be a great patient satisfaction driver.
    2. An 85% guarantee from all the ancillary services to be sure on thier Turn around time wth respect to the services requested would be another step you might want to look at. Like labs, xray,CT etc.
    3. Admissions to the hospital or bed allottment and also moving the patient from ED to the concerned floor would be another factor you might not want to miss on. Best practices with respect to inpatient bed claim 15 minutes will be a good time for a in patient bed, but there are some hospitals which claim a pateint is allotted a bed 90% of the time within  5 minutes of the request.
I hope this information would be helpful for you.
And some other benchmarks if you want to work with would be like a patient would be seen with in 15minutes of patient’s arrival a major patient satisfaction contributor.
I would be glad to follow up with you if you come up with any other info.
    Ramesh!

Hi,U can go thro’ it on your own – you would have gone thro’ many statistical concepts in your Engg. studies……along with that few other techniques like QFD, FMEA, C&E diagram, Control Plans are inlcuded in this 6 Sigma for which you don’t have to spend more money…..I would suggest you spend sometime in web itself, you can understand the DMAIC / DMADV cycle from this isixsigma.com itself.
    for additional info’ call: 9444182612.

    Hanna,
I’m a little short of time, but I could point you out to some articles which should definitely help you out
    http://www.symphonytech.com/articles/precontrol.htm
You will find people who are for and against this method. However the thumb rule I’ve followed is to use pre-control at the shop floor level and use control charts for detecting assignable causes.

I understand the part about there being not enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis.
What I want to know is that what does this p value mean statistically?

    Hanna,
Here’s my take on the use of control charts
They are primitive and lacking in a pro-active approach
For example, you have to group, subgroup and whatever other stratification if necessary to start getting the points on the chart.
If you have a critical process that needs to be monitored daily, I would strongly suggest that you use a pre-control chart rather than traditional control charts. You will see the results immediately. I have done the same and have seen a very high degree of control in my processes.
If you need more information, try Keki Bhote’s ‘World Class Quality’, else I could give you a quick rundown of what the process is.

    Babu,
From what I have seen in the Indian mfg scene, I certainly believe they will have to be more competitive. Having said that, the goal is to have zero defects, improved processess, better ROI, etc.
The tools used in 6s certainly will help them in getting there, though are not the end-all of improvement activities. So, yes, Indian mfg is heading towards 6s levels. Take examples of SKF & Asian Paints- both have pretty good 6s programs in place and are market leaders in their segment.

Refer a good text book (e.g. Box and Hunter)..The replies given by Butler, Yves and Ken are right on the money.
Blind statements such as  ” if p<5% reject the null " that we learned from school do more harm than good because they replace good logical thinking and exploration with pat canned statements.  Taking more samples is always a good idea albeit an expensive one.
There is nothing holy about 5%  Do people know where the 5% come from? (Hint: From Tomatoes – by the person to whom the Box and Hunter book is dedicated to..)
Don’t believe everything you read on the bulletin – including this posting.

The FMEA / Control is integrated into a single format called Dynamic control plan. Current controls portion of FMEA is expanded into the ‘control plan’.
Advantage is that FMEA and control plan are synchronous, the disadvantage being complexity of the info presentation…
    But it works!!!

Whether 1.5 shift exists are not is not clear( to me) . As from this forum it is clear that there are two schools of thoughts. To my little understanding, when i measure my process with a set of data (n=100), i get one particular mean and std. deviation, with in the same process, when i measure another sub group of n=100 i get different mean and std.dev. now if i repeat this process, i have various means and std. deviations.
This itself  is a sample for mean to plot and check the mean of means and std. dev of the mean, I did this out of my own interest on one of our assembly process. My shift is no where near 1.5. To be precise it is .98s.
Now, my question is if there is variation between and with in the sub groups how rational it is either to estimate my long term or short term Sigma level.  As there are no clear   definitions on how to define a   long term or short term ( to my understanding)
I am lost in this confusion, where SS is supposed to be data driven……..! Is it really a data driven to say 1.5 shift exist.  What happens if I don’t consider this?

Nick,Your enthusiasm and commitment to Six Sigma is impressive.  Before picking a project, I strongly suggest that you get explicit support from the decision makers and process owners.  It means selling Six Sigma to top management first.  A BB or GB is really a salesman in the market place of ideas. Without proper support you may find it difficult to get proper data let alone have the process owners accept your six sigma improvement.  About 5 years ago you might have to “prove” Six Sigma but now successful examples abound in your industry.  Success rate of Skunk works is low.  If your company’s leadership is not committed, there are many other companies that would welcome the kind of leadership you are exhibiting.

    Hello Mortez,
To do GRR, you need another person for comparison to determine its repeatability and reproducibility as well. And, note that the other person has to know and uses the equipment as well otherwise you defeat the purpose. The production output before it reaches to Inspector their is always setup or in-process inspection. Try to utilize these people and do the GRR.
    I hope this help.
    Good Luck,
    RAM

    Hello Scott,
Your limits are affected by your measurement of different locations. Try to plot them separately and you’ll see that locations really affects distribution.
    Good Luck,
