I’m the quality improvement coordinator for a community mental health agency serving severely emotionally disturbed children. While I have enough background in statistics and experimental design to appreciate the math and theory behind 6 Sigma, I’m having some difficulty seeing how to apply it to mental health outcomes measures. Any suggestions? I’d appreciate especially hearing from other health care professionals. Thanks.

You could classify your outcomes as defects and non-defects thereby leading the way to calculating sigma quality level. Also, the six sigma methodology can be applied to the processes of care that influence the outcomes. That is, if you identify and improve the processes that influence outcomes you will improve the outcomes.

I’m psychologist and I have a clinic on Brazil.
My idea is to implement the six sigma methodology at clinic process. I’d like to talk with you about the work in this phase.
I’m black belt candidate at a automaker in South America and I have the Base theories for the six sigma, but i’m facing a lot of difficulties on it.
If you want to exchange some ideas with me, I’ll appreciate it.

My background is Industrial/Organizational Psychology and I am a certified Black Belt. I believe that Six Sigma methodology would be excellent for practicing Psychologists. The tools that are used in Industry could easily be applied when working with individuals, family, marriage counseling, etc.
    For example:
Process Mapping could be used to help understand family dynamics (or processes) that are occuring in the home. It would also help in picking up on subtle behaviors that may go unnoticed in the interviewing process.

FMEA (Failure Modes and Effect Analysis) could be used to help the family and the counselor to understand those items that are related in a cause and effect nature or have potentially stronger effects than others. It should bring out those behaviors that particularly effect all family members or just individual family members. For instance a particular behavior in the family has been identified and during the FMEA the Mother and Son rate that behavior as a critical (9 on a scale of 1-10). The Father rates this behavior as a 1 on the same scale. Think about the communication that could take place within this family when they begin to discuss the differences.

I won’t go into all of the tools, this could be lengthy. Hopefully I wetted your appetite to consider using this methodology in a clinical setting I have seen it work wonders in the Industrial setting.
