What do you mean by “more severe”?ย  Each error type has its cost factors, both hard and soft, and my belief is that neither is more “severe” than the other.
    Just my opinion/belief.

    Hey Thanks for the reply….
But what i mean to ask is that assuming a situation where we have both alpha error & beta error, and only one error can be attacked at one time so which error shud be rectified first….

My “philosophy” would be to look at the cost of each error.ย  I would focus on the one that is costing the organization more money.ย  In addition, I would look at the one that directly affects the customer.ย  This one could have more “soft money” associated with it.ย  To me, the main thing is to review each type, and then make an educated decision on which one to tackle.ย  Striding the fence can’t be an option.

Rubberdude is correct.ย  It depends.ย  For example, in healthcare, an alpha or type 1 error would be a false positive on a lab test.ย  The lab says you have cancer but the truth is you don’t.ย  You could have had needless surgery or a retest.ย  Both are bad and costly.ย  But it is better than a beta or false negative test which missed the cancer.ย  Here the outcome is likely death.ย  So, in this case the beta or type two error is far more costly than the alpha.
