    First question, do you mean quality assurance or quality control? The terms are often confused and historically were not distinct. QC is verification that products/services conform to specifications, and rejection of non-conforming items. QC provides useful data about defect rates and types. But it doesn’t look into the causes of defects nor how processes might be improved. QA is about assessing how well processes are working and understanding the causes of defects. QE (quality engineering) uses the data provided by QC and QA to prioritize, design, and implement improvements. I think of this as a three-legged stool. All three legs are needed to support the quality management seat.
