    Good Morning All,
I am presently getting ready to start studying for the AQS certification for Black Belt.  My question is that the recommended reading from the AQS files is very long and i’m sure informative however are all those books necesssary?  I’ve counted 23 as references and I would like to pare those down due to financial constraints.  However I do not want to put at risk my chances of failing the test.
    Thanks for the input.

    Jacy,
Do you mean ASQ as in American Society for Quality?
If you mean ASQ, it would be better if you went to their website (http://www.asq.org) and downloaded a copy of their Body of Knowledge. It is quite extensive. If you haven’t been doing this type of work for awhile, it is unlikely that buying and reading a few books will enable you to pass the test and even you did, you must also bring in two completed projects that have been certified by your company.
Passing the test and applying the knowledge successfully is another thing altogether.

    Jacy,
I agree with Marc’s assessment completely.  Six Sigma is about delivering results not passing tests.  You need to start with a Six Sigma training course that requires project completion and provides mentoring.  Once you fully understand the Six Sigma process, you can continue to learn the tools and tackle bigger projects.  Then if you want the ASQ certification, look at the Body of Knowledge to see if you need to learn any other tools and take the exam.
I have been in Six Sigma for four years.  Earned a MBB certification.  Completed several projects, mentored several others.  I teach two waves of Green Belts each year.  I think that qualifies me as a competent Six Sigma practitioner.  I took the ASQ exam in October and was stunned by its difficulty.  I passed but I’m not sure how.
The weaknesses of the exam are:

The Body of Knowledge is not that well established.  There are several tools that produce the same result and not all the “schools” teach all of the same tools.  Or they teach the same tools using different names.
They have not incorporated computers into the exam and most of the work we do involves computer analysis.
No way to evaluate project work is incorporated into the exam.  What one company or department considers a successful Six Sigma project may be completely different from another.
My advice:  Concentrate on producing results.  Use the Six Sigma methodology to help you do that.  Don’t sweat the exam.

I fully agree with you.Use the ASQ exam only to test yourself against the Body of Knowledge.
I also agree with you regarding the ASQ Exam, which was extermely tough and I also felt that the calculations they made me do at the exam were unnecessay as on projects I would use Minitab instead.

I am planning on taking the ASQ CSSBB exam on March 2nd and am currently reviewing using a CSSBB Primer.  I also intend to purchase practice exam questions.  I agree with the comments here – a large portion of the Measure and Analyze sections of the BOK seems to include manual calculations using tables (how archaic!), and it seems that the same would apply for the Improve section.  Obviously, most practicing BB’s would use statistical analysis software for these tasks.
That said, I have a question for those of you who have taken the ASQ CSSBB exam.  Assuming a person has had over 2 years of Six Sigma experience, completed projects, and trained 3 waves of GB’s, along with reviewing the CSSBB primer and brings that to the exam, what is the probability of success?  Any pointers as far as how to prepare would be appreciated.
