    Folks,
I’m toying with the idea of sitting this exam.
I’m a fairly long-in-the-tooth blackbelt who’s executed multiple projects and innumerable uses of the tools individually (although in a manufacturing environment).
    What do you think?
    Good idea/bad idea?
    Any good ways of preparing?

DO NOT just sit for the test without buying the ASQ BOK or taking their course!
Find someone with a copy of the ASQ (so called) Book of Knowledge (aka BOK) and you’ll see that the topics covered there are way beyond tool usage and go into project mentoring and soft skills…  Not that they say anything wrong, per se, its just that some areas are somewhat subjective and their test is based on their course and BOK…

Old MBB is correct. The ASQ BOK is the result of a committee; it has therefore swelled beyond what is typically the knowledge base of a BB as known by the majority of the world.
I participated in an analysis of two very robust BB curriculum matched to the ASQ BOK for BB. We found the training material covered only 92% of the ASQ BOK. In our opinion a bunch of stuff has crept into the ASQ BOK that is not relevant to a BB’s normal work.
So, get their study guide to assure you see the other stuff.

    Thanks for the thoughts.
I’ve unearthed a Quality Council of Indiana BOK from 2006. They are saying that they have since updated the curriculum. Any thoughts on how big the need is to get an up to date one – or ways in which to this?

If it’s not an “ASQ” BOK don’t bother (if you’re still set on the ASQ certificate)…  Many other organizations, including GE have created Six Sigma reference products that they have called their BOK…
