We have an assembly and final test station were we are experiencing a high failure rate. The process consist of assembling together various subassemblies to create a complete system which is then tested (various different test). I want to use a U -Chart to monitor this process as I get different type of failures (failure mode) per system tool. We build between 1- 4 different types of systems per day and record the mfg. date, sales order#, type of failure, and # of occurrences. Is the U – Chart the appropriate attribute chart to use? I am confused because one data point could be made up 3 minor failures and the other (next build) 3 major failures. Instead, should I then use an SPC chart were the failures are weighed on the the type of defect?

    S,
If you go to the blue bar to your left under Statistics and Analysis you will find a great deal of helpful information on SPC.  Good luck.

U-Chart  is  used  for  defects at  various sample  size, for  attribute  data (fail/pass).

You can use u-chart because this focuses on defects BUT try to partner this with a pareto chart so that you can dissect the different defects that have occurred.
