I like to keep this site up all day at work, so I can check for new forum messages or read an article when I get the chance. I’m trying to be a good site citizen and log in, but I find I’m logged out after some undetermined period of inactivity. It’s pretty annoying, and counter-productive to the (presumed) goal of tracking user activities.

Add to that the fact that anyone can post a message using any user name (registered or not) when they’re not logged in, and I’m left wondering why anyone would ever want to log in to the site. It’s an inconvenience that doesn’t seem to have any benefits.

So, questions for you, kind admins:
    1) Am I always going to be booted after 1-2 hours of inactivity?
    2) Will users ever be required to log in before they can post to the forum?
    3) If we don’t have to log in to post a message, can you at least restrict the use of already-registered user names?
    4) What are the benefits of logging in to the site?

    Thanks.

I had logged in to post this message, but was booted by the site before I submitted. I spoofed my own user name!

If I bump this topic as a logged-in person, will I improve my chances of getting a reply?

Please note that I started the original message logged in, but I was auto-logged out before I hit the submit button.

    Cathy,

I was trying to confirm answers to your questions before replying, but I’ll move ahead with 3 of the 4 now.

    1) Am I always going to be booted after 1-2 hours of inactivity?
    — At this time, after a certain period of inactivity any user will be automatically logged out of the system. This allows the site’s speed to not be held up by inactive users. If you do not expect to regularly be participating in discussions, you can set up an RSS feed and check to see what’s happening through that. Additionally, you can bookmark the “Recent Discussions” setting and keep up with the flow that way – and login only when the spirit moves you to reply.
    2) Will users ever be required to log in before they can post to the forum?
    — Ever? Never say never, but at this time, we prefer to keep registration optional for forum use.
    3) If we don’t have to log in to post a message, can you at least restrict the use of already-registered user names?
    — This is the answer I am waiting on. My understanding is that you are not supposed to be able to use the name of someone who is already registered with a particular name, but your experience shows that isn’t happening. (It is working elsewhere – if you try to post a comment with a registered user name – and you are not that person – the system requires you to select another name.)
    4) What are the benefits of logging in to the site?
    — Many, we believe. One such benefit is that you are able to customize your profile/settings for forum use. Additionally, registered site members will have access to premium content and be offered special promotions that will not be available to the non-registered audience.

I will post again when I have learned what is happening regarding item #3 on your list.

    Sincerely,
    Katie Barry

Couple items I hope you can help me with.

    1. Everytime I try to click the “More” button for the discussion forum, the page does not
    load
    2. When typing in this “Message Box” at the end of the line it does not auto return
    and runs off the page.
    3. Have uploaded a pic for my profile, still showing the clock, been 4 days now.

Other than that, the new look is good, However I did like the old forum list better, I think
was easier to navigate than this version, Just my opinion

    Keep up the good work

    Katie,

Thanks for the answers, and for looking into the name security issue. Glad to know it’s supposed to be secure – now it’s just a matter of fixing it.

One last question – Chad Vader had to ask to have his avatar pic approved, and mine’s been pending for 24 hours now. How long is it supposed to take?
Is there something in place that will notify an admin so we don’t have to prompt you when we want to change an avatar?

    thanks,
    Cathy

    Cathy,

The editorial team gets reports on whose avatars are pending approvals. We do these approvals in groups – not individually. However, when Chad pointed out his avatar was pending, I went into the system and approved his as an exception to that process. (As I did with yours.)

Typically, though, we approve avatars in bunches – every few days.

    Chad,

The editorial team gets regular reports of whose avatars are pending approval, but as you pointed it out to me, I went into the system to approve yours. You likely submitted your avatar just after the last batch was processed.

We’re not able to replicate your other problems – we’ve tried in IE, Firefox and Safari. Are you using a different browser? Are you continuing to have these problems today?

Please let me know. We want to help!

Guess what, it is me without having to log in. Looks like anybody can be Darth if they want to.

I was also Darth in post #185384 a few weeks ago, when I first discovered and reported the issue. Katie said the site prohibits name spoofing in some instances, but I haven’t seen it yet.

I really hope they can fix the issue, because name security is the only reason I can think of for making the switch to this new forum software. As Stan pointed out, free-form discussion has been pretty much killed by this new format. The General board starts to address the problem, but doesn’t allow for new infusions of non-related ideas to keep a single discussion flowing.

Katie, is there any way you can allow users to choose which layout they prefer? The old forum gave the option of grouping threads by topic or listing replies individually in order of time posted. I would use the second option, if it was available.

Darth, what do you think of the avatar? I thought it best to keep with the popular theme “science fiction characters whose names begin with D.”

    Cathy,

If you go to My Profile you can edit your options as shown in the attached screenshot – select message ordering and/or preferred viewtype.

    I hope this helps.

I have a Forum Options tab on my profile edit page, but it gives me none of those options. All I see are my last 10 posts, subscriptions, and and unsubscribe button. Perhaps those functions aren’t enable for regular users?

No – they are available to everyone. (I went through this exercise under my non-administrator account to double-check this before I posted my reply.)

Go to: My Profile > Edit > Update Your Profile

    Avatar approved, Thank you.

Auto return at end of page seems to be operator error

Still having issue when I select “My Discussions” or “More under forum discussion block. Page is simply blank. I have adjusted my internet settings and no difference in the outcome.

Nice avatar you are using. Young pretty woman is always a nice touch although I don’t recognize the character. Is it from Star Wars of Star Trek?

I knew I felt a disturbance in the Force. Nice hot avatar even if it is from that wimpy Star Trek series rather than the esteemed Star Wars series.

Oh dear, my infinite respect for Darth has dropped down a hair — can’t even recognize a Star Trek uniform….I’m not sure if the 3 minute delay is acceptable or not… Don’t you ever get out of your universe? Heavens, what if someone used a Battlestar Galactica avatar?
