    I would like to know the Best Practices available in the industry on Black Belt Candidate selection for BB training.  In our organisation, we have around 100 employees opted for BB training as part of Training Need Identification.  But, as an organisation, we are interested to select 15 of them for the training.  Apart from experience and Performance rating criteria, what else is used as Criteria for BB candidate selection?   Appreciate your response.

    Good question! Six Sigma is basically introduced to lead organization towards a positive change. Hence I suggest to consider following characteristics while choosing BB:
    * Influence & lead large team [& tough nuts :-) ]
    * Confidently work with Sr. Management
    * Quickly learn, especially stats which is a key distinguishing factor for a BB
    * Manage “change” and independently deal with/resolve issue arising out of it

    In addition to what has already been stated, and of course the technical learning that needs to happen, I would highly recommend using Dan Goleman’s Working with Emotional Intelligence.  Goleman has actual emotional intelligence quizzes that can be applied to evaluate prospective BB candidates.  As many of us CPI professionals know, without the soft skills, a CPI practitioner goes nowhere.  While the connotation with the name, “emotional intelligence” may generate eye rolls in your organization, I can personally attest to the effectiveness of using both the concepts and the quiz in generating successful BB candidates.

    Sanjoy Kumar Parial wrote a fairly good article on this for this site.  Search BB selection and you should find it.

     Ps – All I can add is – don’t overlook someone just because of the “sins of their past”, it might be these sins that will make a great BB

    Oftentimes the best BB’s are not going to be those that people like.  In addition to being self-directed/motivated and have good organizational/management capabilities (those traits go for many jobs), they must be inquisitive, and be generally dissatisfied with the status quo.  It also helps to be tenacious like a bulldog.
    Programs that falter are those where SS becomes the way to “move up” and you get a bunch of @ss kissers in the ranks.  Not only do they not achieve, but because they are the “feel good” type, mgmt tends to like having them around and finds faults elsewhere.
