A PhD is probably the best. I have seen different quality initiatives come and go, but once you have the PhD, you can adapt to any initiative “de jour”. For example, in the last 12 years, I have seen an employer move from Kepner-Tregoe to Shainin to 6 Sigma. Each approach professes to be the solution, but each has strengths and weaknesses. That said, I personally favor the 6 sigma approach which has a strong statistical basis that parallels my Master’s in Applied Statistics.

New MB, what concentration or program are you thinking about when you go for your PhD? Also, remember that you’ll be working for less than 20K a year for at least 4 years. Finally, they are not mutually exclusive degrees, just independent. If you go for an online PhD, remember that they are pretty worthless in the pursuit of an Academic career unless you want to teach for the particular institution.
