How does one achieve BB certification if not currently employed? I was assuming you would not have a “worthy” project if you were temporarily unemployed.

     Joel, Good afternoon!
Completing at least one Project is a must if you are going to get a Black Belt certification that prospective employers will respect.  Having said that, I knowthat is difficult to do if you are not currently employed.  Here are some ideas:

    1.  VOLUNTEER — It would be useful to do a Six Sigma Project at a private company, even if you have to do it on a volunteer basis.  However, unfortunately, most companies in the private sector are not accustomed to using volunteer help (and may even be somewhat wary of volunteers).
However, the governmental and/or not-for-profit sectors ARE accustomed to volunteers,  are typically much more appreciative of what volunteers can do for them. There are definite operational problems in many governmental and not-for-profit organizations that could be aided by the application of Six Sigma.  And, typically, there are not the same issues regarding sensitivity of data that private sector companies may have (except for certain kinds of governmental data).

    2.  CONNECT WITH A UNIVERSITY– Many universities have outreach programs, where they connect with external employers to do improvement projects.  If there is such a university in your area, reach out to them and see what is avaialble — you may be able to get a Six Sigma project that way.

    3.  YOUR LOCAL ASQ CHAPTER — The members of the local chapter of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) may be able to help, if you are in the USA or Canada. If you are not an ASQ member, you can find the local Section closest to you using this link:

… hope this is helpful …

ADMD Consulting offers great training material and their consultants are very helpful in answering questions and teaching you through your BB certification..  You may want to give them a try..

    Omashi, Good afternoon!
Regarding your question about simulated projects:

Simulated projects are often fine learning devices, but are not substitutes for doing a real Project as part of a Black Belt certification.
