Does anyone know of concrete, service-oriented business measures (e.g., best practices)?

Use equal parts sand and hardener and only sell it by the cubic yard. You can either add water at the site or bring it premixed in a mixer-truck.

You might find benefit from reading this: http://www.adventive.com/how-to-11.html
Your original post was a little too vague in requesting “business measures”. What are you trying to measure? What is your business? Are you looking at the 30,000 foot level or are you asking for help with respect to your specific business. Do you want more in-depth answers than monetary savings? You have to give the forum more to go on if you want a serious answer. If you don’t share anything, no one else will share anything.
Hope it helps. My 2 cents.

My measure is how many repeat orders I get from my customers.
