When initially starting to calculate, what is a sufficient sample size? How do I determine sample size? I also hear both terms DPPM and DPMO. These are the same, correct?

    Thanks

DPPM = Defective Parts Per Million
DPMO = Defects Per Million Opportunities
“Opportunities” being a key word:  One Part can have mulitple Opportunities for Defects.
Defect vs Defective: A Defect does not necessarily mean a part is Defective. (A scratch on a new car doesn’t render it useless)
So, at risk of mixing my words:  DPPM is a measure of Throughput (how many bad parts come out at the end) and DPMO is a measure of Performance (how many times a mistake is made)

Thanks for the response. A couple of more questions. Do I calculate the same way for both? And still on the topic. Lets say I start from scratch, how long before I can determine what my DPPM or DPMO is? In other words how do I determine sample size? Thanks

you take a small sample and calculate the sd and then depending upon whether your data is var or att calculate required sample size. yeah they are both the same.
