I have lived in the PI techniques for some time in healthcare. I have only recently finished my BB course. I have one question about process improvement that has come up recently that zi have never heard of.

Members of my team keep talking about 5S’ing a process. How do you 5S a process??

@enewport Did you check our 5S section of content? https://www.isixsigma.com/tools-templates/5S

    Hi Eric,

Why Not? 5S may be viewed as more as a Lean tool & Technique but if your process CTQs are in fact measurable in terms of all 5 S’s, then why not. Of course, the CTQ design has to be very very specific. Usually, 5S problems have a known solution hence not extensive sponsorship are given to such projects to implement Six Sigma problem solving. Thats where the scale of solution design comes into picture i think. Discuss this with your MBB if the scope of 5S involves a significant scale to be covered and there are no known solutions to the problem.

    Hope that helps

Yes you can but don’t fall in the trap of just putting things in a neat and tidy place to sustain. Look at the processes and see what can be improved by the team(s) and 5S along the way.

5S, from Hiroyuki Hirano’s “5S for Operators: 5 Pillars of the Visual Workplace”, is a basic concept in Lean. It provides a framework for sustaining continuous improvement. Six Sigma is a methodology for identifying and eliminating the root causes of defects. I’ve found it wise to use them together.

5S is not about one day’s work it must be in daily use it can increase your employee’s morale satisfaction and so on.you can better use it in any process where there is need of improvement.

@enewport,5s also is very important in all level of work, to maintain your 5s,you can start to formulate a group of 5s auditor with their corresponding area of responsibility and conduct the 5s audit.

@enewport – as my friend @cseider says, of course you can 5S a process, but you may find more benefit to first perform a SMED exercise. While originally developed to improve physical change-overs of manufacturing equipment, you can perform the same type of analysis on a process. This will challenge everything that is being performed, when, and by whom. Once you’ve streamlined the steps of the process, then apply 5S principals to ensure that everything is in place and available for each step of the process.

    Good luck.
