Agile and Scrum are the development versions of lean. These disciplines don’t have as strong of a quantitative background as six sigma. However, if you are wanting to go into hardware or networking in IT, the black belt will be fine and approach as either a manufacturing or transactional depending on the organization and scope of the process improvement department or role.

Choosing the right career is the most important decision you will make. The dynamic new world of work is characterized by increased competition, automation and outsourcing, rising unemployment and professional skills. If you are interested in IT, know what are the requirements.

Are you interested in hardware/networks/systems or in software/applications? 6S is more readily applicable to the former. Despite all the emphasis on software engineering and the published work on 6S for software, software development remains a creative activity. Agile methods work because they unleash rather than constrain. DFSS is applicable for defining “what” but not “how”. That said, some software development is truly engineering, for instance embedded control systems.
