The answer depends on your role.  Are your responsibilities of an engineer, quality manager, technician, calibration technician, etc.  There’s a seperate ASQ certification for each of those, as well as many others.  You can see details on that by going to (http://www.asq.org/training-and-certification.html).

Personally I would suggest that you not go for any certification yet.  If you’re still learning the basics you’re better off getting some experience there first.  I believe all ASQ certifications require a few years of experience in the field, and even if they didn’t they would be difficult to pass without it.  The certification should be part of the journey and not the end goal.

There are many types of certifications.  Quality Manager, Quality Engineer, Quality Technician etc….   If you are currently in a technician role, I would suggest going for that certification.  If you get in the habit of taking the approapriate certification exam for each level, as you grow in your career, the tests become easier to take.
The ASQ certifications have different levels of importance depending on the company you work for, or want to work for.  Some view them as very important, some could care less.
For me, because I needed to start working right out of high school, and have just now started working toward a bachelors degree – had I not gotten the ASQ CQE I would never had been able to find a job!
So, if you don’t have any other degree, I think the ASQ certifications will help in your employement search.  I know it did mine.  You can’t be uneducated and pass the CQE – it’s a tough test…. so is the BB exam – but I found the CQE more difficult.

    Cheers!
