Did anyone ever get back to you? I am an Operations Manager and one of our new CEO’s is also big on centerlining. I’m curious if you have found out anything, because I have the exact concern you had.

0April 25, 2004 at 6:35 am #99060Centerlining is a process management technique which will help to improve production key performance indicators (safety, housekeep, output, waste, delay, etc.). It has been used successfully by many facilities of Kimberly-Clark Corp (wellknown with Kleenex, Scott, Huggies, Kotex, etc.) over the world.
I haven’t heard any other company who uses it except KCC). I am eager to know who else uses it also.
It is an internal confidential “weapon” so I can’t share outside of KCC (I’m a KC-er). Sorry for that.
Quang0April 25, 2004 at 3:19 pm #99062Nowadays there are no secrets.Just imagine if Motorola has kept SS confedential, and tha same apply to all the management tools and methods?
0May 6, 2004 at 3:46 pm #99844I am currently providing centerlining procedures for a manufacturing plant. What would you like to know about centerlining
0May 6, 2004 at 3:50 pm #99845Centerlining is a process for determining the optimal machine operating setpoints. When you have increased down time and waste in some cases it can be attributed to the machines not being up to OEM spec.

GriswoldParticipant@chipgiiiInclude @chipgiii in your post and this person will
be notified via email.Centerlining. I worked a lot with Abitibi Consolidated in Canada. They own quite a few paper mills, primarily Newsprint Production. Anyway, they use Six Sigma tools and teams to optimize their processes. To find optimum settings for their equipment (which to me sounds a little like centerlining), they’ve conducted numerous DOEs and have been very successful.

Toolazy4uMember@Toolazy4uInclude @Toolazy4u in your post and this person will
be notified via email. This is a never ending always changing process that is torture in some small companies it takes a task force of employees and maintenance personnel. This process has big rewards but at big up front cost. The concerns with trouble shooting and diagramming not just the plant but the whole manufacturing line/s itself. You start all over with what you thought you knew and get rid of it. All your time that was invested in the set up and training…. WASTED… they will all change for the better of course, but time is the factor. How much time can you spend before it is not in your budget? The paper work that is created is another job in itself. Keeping on task and on time with a guide line that is set up on an exponential time grade is daunting to say the least. It has a snow ball or quick sand effect. I tell you this IT IS WORTH IT…

0March 12, 2007 at 10:33 pm #153189sounds like lean manufacturing to me or that is what ive heard it called just triming the fat
0April 3, 2007 at 4:22 pm #154345Centerlining is the methodology used to reduce product and process variability and increase machine efficiency. It does this by the identification of key process variables. Centerlining is the first step to moving away from product acceptance and to process control. Centerlining is the strategy and there are step by step implementation guides, specific training and coaching techniques that have been developed. I must stress that Centerlining is NOT LEAN manufacturing although it does lay the foundations for Process Excellence (The next stage after Centerlining). One of the Gentlemen on this chain of messages is very correct that it takes an engaged workforce. The implementation plan walks you step by step on how to implement the tools, change the culture of the workforce from reactive to proactive, and ensure long term sustainability that delivers business results. I am implmenting the same at a satchet packaging machine at our site.
Thanks0January 10, 2008 at 8:07 pm #167057The first thing that I normally look for are all of the critical POA’s (points of adjustments) and then the non-critical POA. Also you may think about how you will be marking these along with what type of documentation (pictures/written ref. points) you will use. I have used small 6″ metal rules along with paint markings and have documented measurements with pictures and reference points on them, along with what the measurements should be at the centerline points. This takes alot of teamwork and input from various people in order to make sure you are documenting the correct things.
Hope this helps!0March 4, 2008 at 6:42 pm #169250

Rene van VlietParticipant@Rene-van-VlietInclude @Rene-van-Vliet in your post and this person will
be notified via email.can you give me information about ” how it works” and a
implementation route map.0October 7, 2008 at 8:11 pm #176517Centrelining implementation comes in two plans. Each plan has 5 stages.
Plan 1 – Centrelining implementationPlan 2 – Development of a Manufacturing Specification
Foundation – Introduction to the principlesTechnical Development – Determine a strategy to reduce variabilitySystem Construction – Creation of a system for process controlImplementation – Switch on your system (including training)Sustainability – Introduce Key Performance Indicators to manage your process
Each step provides detailed information to move your process from Reactive to Proactive(including tools and comprehensive training packages).
The first plan reduces variability and the second plan optimises your process. The plan works in high tech working environments who would use state of the art software or lower tech processes who may only use a pencil and paper to record information.
This whole plan fits into a bigger picture which builds Brand Equity and in turn increases market share.
Anyone interested in learning more needs to post a email address. I’d be happy to help out with so helpful tips. I have all the tools and info you require!!
