The best place to start is the source.  You can download a free PDF of the CMMI from the Software Engineering Institute at http://sei.cmu.edu and there is a wealth of related information.  There is no single roadmap or readiness questionnaire.  The current CMMI is designed to be sliced and diced according to the needs of your organization.

The business I work for is just beginning CMMI implementation. The way we are approaching it is initially all development sites receive a benchmark appraisal
(we’re at Level 1 – no surprise there)The appraisers provide a detailed report including status of all PA’s: SG’s, GG’s,Sp’s etc.At this point, we begin planning activities to bring our processes to a point where we will meet the requirements for Level 2.We are using a hybrid between the staged and continuous representations. Once we are appraised as a Level 2 business, we will begin working from the Continuous representation, focusing on PA’s that will provide the most benefit first, then working on other PA’s.One thing that is EXTREMELY important is to have CMMI implementation be a company directive. Unless it has executive endorsement, you will find that it will be next to impossible to implement.

I had an opportunity to work for a company that was focused on CMMI and as a Black Belt it was hard for me to implement LSS methodology.
IT companies that implement CMMI go for the different levels of its maturity (CMMI-1,2,3,4,5).
There is no other way to impement CMMI or LSS unless one has the executive endorsement.
However, I am interested to know more how we can combine LSS and CMMI.

The Purpose of a CMMI directive is to improve the maturity of an IT shop.   Shops at level 1 are said to be in chaos – there is no repeatability to their processes, thus variability is immeasurable.  The shop must first improve its maturity to the point where consistent project AND process management disciplines are in place, typically level 3 and above.  Once at Level 3, LSS can be applied to measure the variability of the processes and implement improvements based on these measurements (this actually takes the shop level 4).  That said – good luck implementing LSS in a level 1 company ;-)

In addition to what Dave had to say, LSS can be used to initially map whatever processes exist, then when implementing a new PA, LSS tools may be used to make the new processes more robust, with minimal NVA – DFSS, where the “Design” applies to the design of the process, rather than a product.Once processes are established, built on the CMMI framework, LSS tools are ideally suited for improving upon processes.

Implementing the CMMI can be very documentation intensive. Many companies base their documentation on MIL-STD-498 which is very fat, labor intensive to implement, and difficult to get buy-in because because of the steep learning curve. The approach I’ve taken with a client is to make the documentation as lean as possible. Remove all the superfluous material, focus on developing lean templates that require documenting only value-added information.Andrew
