Looking for best practices around a communication plan for Six Sigma. We are just starting black belt training and need to start sending communications out to the employees. We have thought of the typical stuff (company newsletter, emails etc) but are looking for some ideas and suggestions from others out there. I am in the process of creating the communication plan for our entire company. Thanks

Before you start with the more of the same, start with the people who work in your organization. Stratify and characterize them by the way that they communicate best – that Six Sigma thing about customer focus. I am not sure in your company but I would be willing to bet that effective communication to the executive team is probably different than it is for the operations people. They may even have different concerns. Maybe a QFD?
You might want to consider rolling it in with other initiative news (just in case your company has more than one) so that everyone understands that you recognize there are multiple things occuring inside the organization. Maybe even feature some project that uses multiple initiatives?
There are companies that also do this for a living – depends on how important it is.

Thanks for the note. Yes we will be hiring specialists to actually execute the creative end but I am in charge of the actual strategy. I have been interviewing top dogs down to get a feel for where we are with current beliefs and where we need to go. We are just starting so the first round will be basic stuff…but again am hoping there are some best practices out there! Thanks again.0October 5, 2004 at 4:32 am #108540

I don’t remember even seeing anyone who tried to measure the effectiveness of their communication plan so I’m not sure who would know if they actually had a best practice. When we were at GE they were extremely effective at blowing a best practice through the company. The guy that was in charge of that is at Home Depot in Atlanta these days.

We have found that the best way to communicate our six sigma plan is through training sessions. The conventional communication tools just don’t seem to cut it. We offer 5 levels of training, from a single day to 6 months.

One time we follow this process to empower the people:
Create a logo for the program, the logo was kind of secret, them select a group to get an expresion for the program, this team create a Big Puzzele, every part of the puzzele was provide to all the employees, them we assambly the puzzele.
After that we made something that we collect “Six Sigma Fiesta” we provide a differents suveniers, in this party we present my project and get words from all the Leadership team, finally the project start and we get monthly meeting with the Leadership team to inform the status of the project an in the Floor we did more activities to bring the attention, team work, use of the tools in regular daily operation, very practical way. I have a powerpoint presentation that can share with you. if you get me your e-mail.0October 7, 2004 at 1:42 pm #108678

Geri MalottParticipant@Geri-MalottInclude @Geri-Malott in your post and this person will
be notified via email. Our company rolled out the six sigma communication plan by starting a newsletter with a general overview of DMAIC, tools to use and introduction of the who your black belt is and who has completed greeen belt training. We have now progressed to speaking directly to projects that are in-process. We have also started a “lunch and learn” session with presentations covering projects which are in the control phase. The next step is to have folks learn DAMIC by going through an exercise.

Better yet, invent a quality or waste problem in a classroom environment and solve it with the instructor acting as a BB. Processing an invoice, shipping a product, making a product, hiring an employee, reducing request for quote time are examples that could be solved in a case study in an hour. Have fun.
