Quality control in construction is pretty lax. It usually consists of a superintendant, hopefully, catching any serious defects. I have been able to find virtually nothing regarding the use of Six Sigma in the construction field. Anyone out there know of any case studies or resources for construction applications? Commercial, industrial, residential?

    Bill F,
There was a division of GE in Southern Penn. that did major construction projects (like environmental facilities). They may have something.
    Good luck

Refer the left side menu for understanding the guidelines where all six-sigma can be applied.
According to my study, it has been successfully implemented. Any details needed I can help you.

    Bill,
We should talk, I am a BB for a contruction equipment sales and rental company, we also offer a full line of supplies.  I am always working to learn how I can work with the customers we have (mostly construction companies) to share the power of Six Sigma for relationship building.
Please reply if  you would would like to talk further I think we could share some ideas.  Respond with email or phone if interseted.

Bechtel has been using Six Sigma for a number of years on it’s EPC activities. I my self while at Bechtel attempted to improve ES&H preformance using Lean Six Sigma methodologies. Do you have a specific problem or question?

The bottom line of my quest is that I have been instituting quality control in a construction company. I have been looking into SS as a way to go to the next level. My interest is specifically how I would use SS in this endeavor. What measurement techniques would be used? I have a database of items to be corrected and those that need to be completed as well as punchlist items and resident walkthrough corrections. QC checklists are being used and expanded on a continuing basis. My goal is to formalize the whole QC and construction process to improve and make consistent the quality. We build in multiple States and use different trade contractors, so the process has to come from inhouse and incorporate new contractors. Before I get trained in SS, I would like to be sure I am going in the righr direction. Knowing that someone has been successful before me would be a plus, both for my own peace of mind, as well as to sell the program to the owners.

I conducted Black Belt and Champion training for a local home builder and their contractors. There’s an absolute ton of rework and waste that can be traced to transactional process errors, along with significant errors in executing “correct” instructions. Opportunities abound for mistake-proofing, flow charting, and compliance auditing, among numerous other tools. All of those problems cause homes to be in-process far longer than they need to, driving up work-in-progress, wasting resources, and increasing costs.

Take a look at these 2 websites:
    http://www.leanconstruction.org/
    http://lean.mit.edu/
They have some great examples of application of lean and six sigma to improvement in the world of construction – facilities, aerospace, etc.  Fact is there’s considerable overlap regardless of industry or whether they have called it lean, six sigma, lean six sigma, or dogcatching.  It’s the mindset that matters.
From my experience in world of construction – the absolute first requirement is creating stable processes.  It will have an immediate impact on customer and internal efficiency.
