Continuous data can be measured – time, length, weight, volume.  Continuous data can be subdivided – hours, minutes, seconds
Discrete data can be counted or categorized – number of people, gender, month, number of documents.  Discrete data cannot be divided – you can’t have half a person or a quarter of a document.
Anova is for continuous data, Chi square is for discrete, t test is for continuous and proportions test is for discrete.
