    Hi everyone,
I’m trying to figure out which control chart would be best for measuing whether our intranet dashboard is loading properly. The main page is supposed to be fully populated with all the data and graphs within 10 seconds (I know…we’re pulling from other databases and scrapes so it’s a little long, but our customers said 10 seconds is ok). I’d like to see if our process is in control or not. We are collecting data every 10 minutes throughout the day. What’s the best control chart to use. I’m confused by the whole “subgrouping” concept because we’re collecting the data continuously. I have determined that the data is continuous with a lower threshold of zero. Thanks for any help you can offer. I eagerly await your answers as this is my green belt project! :)

    Hi Tim!
Sounds like you have variable data.  Given that, I would try the traditional X Bar and R chart first.  As for the subgrouping I wouldn’t worry too much….  I would use 5 and move on.  Any number between 3 and 8 is fine but 5 seems to be the most commonly used value in most applications.
    Good luck with the project!

    Tim,
Subgroups need to be selected such that there is least variation within subgroup (Common cause variation only) and maximum variation between subgroups (Common + Special cause variation). If the hit rate is reasonably high, then you may want collect 5 samples at a time at frequency of 30 minutes each. Use this data for X bar and R chart.
If do not want to bother much about subgroups, you may opt for I and mR chart where individual data point (at whatever interval you decide) could be plotted.
If you are also tracking defects data, e.g. number of components not loaded correctly, you may also want to plot c chart for attributes alongwith variable chart.
