Hello
Request anyone to clarify my following question,
I have a lot size, I determine the sample size, I inspect for laid down specifications (categorised into critical, major& minor). Now I have number of defectives and number of defect. Obviously no. of defects will be more as I am getting more than one defect in one defective unit. AQL is based on number of defective units obtained while no. of defects helps me in prioritizing which defect I need to tackle first.
Now, a) Which number is more important among the two – Number of defectives or number of particular defect being repeated? b) How do I record both as it seems to be difficult? Can I ignore major or minor defect in a Unit if I get a critical defect in same unit?
Waiting for a helpful response.

The No. of defective units is important if you are deciding whether to reject /accept a lot based upon your samples .
Whereas recording the defects will help you in analysing the defects and prioritize the actions to reduce the defective units .
Recording both is difficult but essential if you are planning to make any improvements .

But do I need to record as to how many times a particular defect has been repeated in my sample sizeorjust record that this particular defect has been encountered?0July 26, 2007 at 5:55 am #159086

But you may use the unit if it has some defects0July 26, 2007 at 10:31 am #159097

Defects would also give insight as to what kind of defects are you getting. Doing a pareto would give insights as to which defects occur most. Again there could be certain defects which makes the product unusuable. So concentrating on those defects are on high priority than other defects. However going forward you need to reduce them as well.
For recording purpose i dont see a reason why you are not able to record both? Any unit which has one or more defects would mean defective unit. So capture defects unit wise/defect wise you will get both!

Can you tell what exactly is the product that you are referring to.
For recording the data use a simple matrix wherein you have column headings like date ,unit no, and the types of defects you encounter as the column headings .In this way any entry in the rows mean you have a unit which is defective and you need only to put tick (s) (or enter 1 ) below the particular defect (s) .The column total no. of ticks ( or 1s) will give you the total defects encountered and the no. of entries made will give the no. of defective units found.
