I’m looking for examples, case studies, or ideas about how DMAIC can/has been applied to the project planning and project management processes.  We’re chartering a Green Belt project to improve successful delivery of IT projects, with the defect being defined as any project that misses its scheduled release date.  I think there might be some opportunities to used some concepts from Critical Chain/TOC.
Initial thoughts from the GB and sponsor are that a)its too big for a GB project, b)project to project variation is too much (scope and area of focus), and c)GB won’t be able to effect change.
I’m the MBB mentor for this project, and I think its a worthwhile project.  But I want to make sure that we leverage any work that has already been done in this area, so that we don’t have to reinvent the wheel, and to give the GB and sponsor the confidence to move forward.

The use of PERT or other project mngt software is better for individual project mngt.
However, if you experience reoccurring, similar defects over multiple projects then DMAIC may help you find & fix that root cause.

Brandon, thanks for you thoughts. I’m not trying to determine the best protocol for managing individual projects…we utilize SDLC for that.  I’m trying to identify and eliminate root causes for late projects (actual release date > planned release date).  I’m also not looking for affirmation that DMAIC can be used in this case, I’m looking for examples/case studies where it HAS been used, and the outcome of those projects.

    JRT,
Try contacting Thomas Pyzdek (I think he is in Tucson). I am not sure if he has done the work you are looking for but I know PMI references him frequently.
    Good luck
