are you a six sigma consultant?
How are you going about the implementation?
What are the prerequisites for taking up 6-sigma?0December 21, 2000 at 5:00 am #65637hi abhinav
iam not a six sigms consultant,i had been implementing the six-sigma methodology through my company.
we had been using the methodologies of DMADV & DMAIC & other satistical tools to carry our process to six -sigma.
it requires lot of dedication ,will power, vision & the will to change to adapt to the process.
i can help you out with respect to the issues relevant to the six sigmasridher

0December 23, 2000 at 5:00 am #65643Hello Sreedher,
I am taking the six sigma training courses in my company and running my first project during this training. I am happy to have this chance to ask you some questions.
I am in the logistics department, and my project covers two parts: Inventory Control process and Order Picking Time. I am having trouble on using the statistical method in the project. I can only use statistics to show the current performance and improved performance, which I think is too simple for a six sigma project. Do you have any advice? or do you have any real case of implementing six sigma in logistics industry?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

>I can only use statistics to show the current performance and improved performance, which I think is too simple for a six sigma project.
Make sure that you are controlling the process, not the other way around. Some transactional process improvement processes that I have run in the past only required collecting the data and displaying it to managers to help shape the improvements. Don’t get caught up in the hype of statistics. Sometimes you will need (it will be required) stats to solve the problems. Other times you won’t.

I once ran the transportation department and might be able to help. First, I converted all of my deliverables to measurements. If the customer expected it on Monday, did it arrive on Friday or Tuesday? Both might be defects in the customer’s eyes? Did all vendors provide their service at or under the quoted amount to maintain the budget? Did the shipments arrive undamaged and not missing any pieces? Was it transported properly (e.g. air ride, etc.)?
The take away is: look for anything that a customer might find as a defect. Call a few customers. Ask them about their latest shipments. Write everything down. Given a chance, customers are our biggest assets in improving our processes and services.

You are right that statistics indicates your current performance and your improved performance. To emphasize when we say that we talk about ‘improvement’
it is a result of some modification in the process. If the output of the process has changed positively we say we have attacked ‘right cause of variation’.Coming to your situation, could you answer my following questions,
Have you defined the objective of the project? If so, you are looking forward to achieve change in which parameter? With the change that you expect in outcome of the project, what cost savings you expect?
ABOVE QUESTIONS RELATE TO THE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT?Have you identified the potential area for cost saving? If so with the application of breakthrough strategy what improvement you have achieved?Have you converted the improvement into money language? If so has the outcome met the target you defined in the scope?
ABOVE QUESTIONS RELATE TO THE EXECUTION OF THE PROJECT?It is the scope that defines a Project as simple or complex. In my opinion we cannot define anything such too simple for a six sigma project or anything of that kind. If you have defined a scope and achieved the scope using six sigma methodology, it can be called as a successful six sigma project.
However I require more specific information about your situation so that I can suggest some solutions in the related areas.
I can provide you with case studies in my experience but they are too big to dicuss here.

0January 19, 2001 at 5:00 am #65719I have just been given the task to come up with a way to reduce rework( one step success) with in my company. I have been involved in many Process Improvement teams, however they do not always pan out. I need some good leads on information about six sigma and what is the best way to gather the statistical aspects? I know to go to the imput with the highest variation but is having tags with each order gathering all info as it is ran the right way or the best way? It seems like so much information. Do you know if the are software programs out there to help the everyday entering on a spread sheet?
Any information anyone has for me to make this a successful transition to one step success you may e-mail me at [email protected]Thank You
Wanda0January 20, 2001 at 5:00 am #65720Hi wanda,
Try if statistical software called Minitab r-13 will help you.
