Does Six Sigma work in an Software/IT industry? How? Please specify with examples?

@Pravin25 — Did you search our site? We have a whole section on Industries, including Software/IT applications: https://www.isixsigma.com/industries/software-it/

Yeah, it does. I can recommend a book: Six Sigma Software Quality Improvement by Vic Nanda and Jeff Robinson. Lots of case studies. It’s been hard to get traction in software development due to the difficulty in identifying opportunities for defect. If you focus on the product — Well you know the conundrum about software measurement. Most still resort to bugs per KLOC (thousand lines of code) since it’s easy to measure. If you focus on the process, as we should, what are the value-added steps? (An opportunity for defect is technically defined as a value added step where a defect might be introduced). Although we use the term “software engineering” it’s still mainly a creative process that can’t be proceduralized step-by-step. We have high-level stuff such as requirements definition, design, coding, etc.

The thing is we aren’t producing the same thing over and over. Every program is something new. DFSS is more applicable than DMAIC.

I agree with Don Strayer. In IT/Software industry DFSS is more applicable than DMAIC. DMAIC basically applies when you have a process which you want to improve however, in case of product/process design DFSS is used to pro-actively optimize the design at the initial stages in order to fulfill customer requirements.
The suitability of DFSS for agile development methodologies can be found in many books.

    Hi,

Please send me a private mail since I mentored a couple of six sigma GB projects for IBM in Hungary.

    Hello Norbert,

Please share me some of case studies especially on Cost reduction (Appraisal /Opportunity) to [email protected] if possible.

    Thank you!!

Don Strayer gives a good idea on metrics. Also, many folks have decided to count a line of code as an opportunity if they want to use DPMO and get a sigma value (shifted or non-shifted).

Rightly said Chris and Don Strayer. As I have been implementing Six Sigma Projects in IT industry I can give you some example of how we use it.

There can be two aspects here as mentioned below:
    1. Improving the Quality of the Software or Software Development Process – In this aspect Defect Density (Defect / KLOC or Defect / Function Points etc), Estimation Accuracy, Computing Resource Utilization Effectiveness, Compliance to Best Coding Practices etc can be used as metrics.
    2. Improving the Business Process being digitized – In this aspect, Cycle Time, Effort Consumed or any other process specific metric can be used.

    Hope it helps !!!
