In the Netherlands, there are no quality criteria for dog walking services. We are doing an assignment for school in order to make these criteria. We were wondering if Six Sigma is a program we could use for this assignment. If so, how do we define quality in this case?

    Dear Karin,
I think there are some aspects of Six Sigma you can try to implement in dog walking services. If you can, please make a draft of your business and I will try to give You some hints. My e-mail is: [email protected]

    Karin,
The answer is fairly simple – the Customer defines Quality.  So go survey current dog walking service customers.  Go to kennels/pet stores/etc. and survey potential customers on what they would want in a service that would make them try it for the first time.  Get measurable requirements – when a customer says “low cost”, have them define low cost.  When they say “reliable”, have them define reliable (such as shows up within 5 minutes of appointment time).
Then take your survey results and translate them into operational definitions for the service. That’s the Voice of the Customer part – then you use other SS tools to make sure the business can repeatably and reliably deliver that service.

Hello, I think you could define the quality by how many defects occur after a dog has been walked. For instance maybe a defect is the owner having to walk his dog 2 hours later? Or a defect could be for the dog leaving a present on the kitchen floor for the owner. Think of what the customer would want out of the service and how it could go wrong.
