Since you will apparently believe anything, why don’t you just do a Google Boolean search for:

    statistics +”Mikel Harry” +famous

Besides Stan, Carnell and the infamous statistician Vinny, try this link:

Recognizing that as you go through Darth’s little listing you are still missing some of the more mathematically notable yet apparently on some “modern day neo-classical statistical scale” minor luminaries and not worthy of mention, the true greats Vincenzo Viviani and Evangelista Torricelli.

I have what might be, at first impression, be the most boring book in the world. “The Cambridge Dictionary of Statistics,” by B.S. Everitt. From the preface;”The dictionary contains approximately 3000 headwords and short biographies of more than 100 statisticians (fellow statisticians who are not included here should note the single common characteristic of those who are).”My favourite way to focus the essence of Six Sigma is to show everyone the 10 Deutsche Mark note. It features the image of Carl Friedrich Gauss and the equation of the normal distribution, forever cementing the relationship between math, statistics and money.

I will add a vote for Dorian Shannin, a man who brought a lot of simple but powerful improvement tools.  B vs C, Variable Search, Pre-Control etc….

For my money, Phil Crosby and Mike George have both been instrumental in driving acceptance of quality in general and Lean Six Sigma specifically.

I also have a copy of The Cambridge Dictionary of Statistics – by B. S. Everitt, a wonderful book.   In fact when my kids were little they’d say at bedtime, “Oh, Daddy, read to us from The Book again…”    Those were wonderful years of little debates about which statistician did this or that or which theorem or test was the most all inclusive, most powerful or most appropriate and why.    I guess it’s true that geeks beget geeks.

I liked your comment about the “10 Deutsche Mark note featuring the image of Carl Friedrich Gauss… and the equation of the normal distribution, forever cementing the relationship between math, statistics and money.”    It all ties together.

Darth, you are far too modest. You should also be included in the list.
Here is a micro camera image we secured from a recent consulting assignment at Warwick Industries.
If you remember, you had just competed the “Holy Grail Touchstones to Success” part of the presentation and the popular double rubber rocket launcher golf ball catapult (only two yellow-belts were injured) and you were getting started with some motivational and inspirational words for the team.
Willard (sic) Pareto you not, but a world class statistican and motivator with a sense of humor you are!!! Stay tuned for Darth meeting Babe of Sister’s friend Hedi Klum sometime in the future…

Thanks Phil, I remember that session.  I recall that I had to destroy two managers since I found  their lack of faith in Six Sigma to be quite disturbing.  As for Babe and Heidi, I hope you didn’t acquire the photos I think you have.  They were quite risque and probably not appropriate for this Forum.

Those images I had to surrender to Mrs. Darth during the “Tazer” incident. Probably best not to take any calls from attorney’s.
What about it Darth? Do you have too much time on your hands or is it just that some people work harder than others and don’t punch out and hit the parking lot about five minutes to five?
I don’t think Wilfred (sic) Pareto was a time clock puncher, do you?

That is because we are the ultimate Lean Six Sigma practioners and have removed all non valued activities from our day thus leaving us plenty of time to do this since so little of our day consists of valued added activities.

Phil, this is copyrighted material from one of my shows.  A few minutes after this shot was taken, Heidi and Darth both got down to it and compared thongs before the studio audience.  It was so hot that Stuttering John stopped stuttering.

Darth, should you not remember well in your advancing age, that was quite a episode a while back that required Vinny to reminded you about, and tramatic for the rest of us, something about a digital learning disability CODEWORD “Cool/Vinny” technique.
In your opinion what is the best on-line course in copying and pasting pics available? If I don’t have Google with images can I participate? How much will it cost? Will I get a certificate? Can you e-mail me the exam questions in advance? Do you offer courses in Deli? I like corned beef……
I guess that we can say that Stan is the Master Debater for setting up last summer’s big contest. No wait, that was the other guy…..

Since the bank has acquired an interest in a Chinese bank, they are now paying in yuan. Paychecks are therefore  only 12% of what  I think they are.

Mine, however, while not lacking rigor, had an added challenge on defense day.

Much like competitive diving where there is the precision of the dive itself compounded by a degree of difficulty multiplier…

The operations research continuously iterating logistical Markov analysis using node-based transient stimuli communicated through interpretive dance took it over the mark.   Ping, ping, ping, dada boom, dada boom, ping, ping, ping, ping, dada booooom.   Many are still humming it.

    Vinny;
    Nicely done.
It just so happened Darth was involved in a two-section program which was further complicated by having a costume requirement as a part of the process.
Here is a secret image from the second part which took place in the university parking lot outside in the shadow of the Empire State Building.

Sure it wasn’t Broadway, but where else could you hope to see Darth Vader, CP30 and one of the M&M candy guys all breakdancing and singing “New York, New York” and chasing away the pigeons from the downtown buildings.
What’s that? Is that a thong on CP30? On loan from Dr. Darth himself.

The referenced event went well but I am still wondering why the M&M guy wanted me to put on the chain and handcuffs.  Possibly it was his evil twin, the S&M Guy.
Dr. Barry of the Bench by the Bay recently sent me the pic below of said Dr. Vinny actually doing his Dissertation Defense Dance along with his girlfriend at the time.  Dr. Barry warned him that some of his sensations might become a little distorted and sadly pointed out that she was NOT wearing a mink coat.

Hmmmmmmm…Vinny did once say he was originally from Texas, and they do dress a bit funny down there; and being a rigorous academic I would bet he favors a large bow-tie; a large straw hat to keep the sun off his fair skin and support hose because of all that sitting in the lab.
That is one ugly girlfriend. He must have met her during his peyote on demand period.
Distorted sensation or not, she looks like she even has bigger feet than he has…That’s a bad sign, I’ll bet she dumped him…..Well, you know why..

No.  Sadly, in a way I wish that we’d only grown apart.   But Melinda’s constant sarcastic references to my Scouting days had me a bit concerned and upon seeing the attached newspaper clipping in her diary gave me pause (or perhaps paws) to reconsider our relationship as well as a bit better understanding of her unusually large feet – anyway, she was not, as the case with many interspecies relationships, a long term dalliance.   More of a short-term rebellious grad student fling on my part.   Memorable none the less though.

As old as this thread is, it bears constructive rehashing.  While a sense of history, acknowledgment and reverence of the true giants in the quality field such as Deming and Juran, is important, it’s also important that we understand and accept that we stand on the shoulders of many giants.   The giants of quality made advances from a practice oriented approach incorporating applied mathematics and statistics in conjunction with technical fields such as industrial engineering, operations research and workplace psychology but their foundation was the work of many mathematicians now long dead but never to be forgotten.   A few of the remaining January birth dates of past masters of that most pure, pristine and foundational of the sciences are as follows:

    1/16 William Werner Boone
    1/17 Edward Foyle Collingwood
    1/18 Paul Ehrenfest
    1/19 Garrett Birkhoff
    1/20 André Marie Ampère
    1/21 Cora B. Hennel
    1/22 Leonard Eugene Dickson
    1/23 David Hilbert
    1/24 Abram Samoilovitch Besicovitch
    1/25 Joseph-Louis Lagrange
    1/26 Eliakim Hastings Moore
    1/27 Charles Dodgson, (Lewis Carroll)
    1/28 Louis Joel Mordell
    1/29 Ernst Eduard Kummer
    1/30 Michelangelo Ricci
    1/31 Samuel Loyd

Submitted with respect and fond remembrance of those whose work, efforts and non-technology-aided brilliance, continues to light our paths.

    Sincerely,
     E. H. Moore

Me thinks you write of another droid.   Sure, R2D2 was once of my many noms de plum, but my many funny farms are and have been deeply personal, quite internalized and only shared with the unfortunate and somewhat traumatized few.    Unless of course you can determine the row depth and orientation of my cranial farm land’s plowed earth in mere passing – not all that incomprehensible a task, I suppose.
